Job Title: CNC & Manual Machinist

Hours: Monday-Friday: 8:00am - 4:00pm (37.5 hours per week)
Rate of Pay: £35,000 - £45,000 per annum (DOE), plus benefits

To drive Aerodyn Ltd.’s growth by ensuring efficient and effective slip ring operations, the CNC & Manual Machinist is responsible for the manufacture and verification of precision-engineered components & tooling defined by engineering drawings. The role requires a strong understanding of critical dimensions, tight tolerances, and GD&T, with responsibility for ensuring components meet quality and regulatory requirements. The position operates within AS9100 requirements.
Key Responsibilities:
- Set up, operate, and maintain CNC and manual machining equipment, including mills, drills, lathes and grinders.
- Manufacture components, tooling and fixtures in accordance with engineering drawings, work instructions, and route cards.
- Achieve and maintain tight tolerances and critical dimensional features.
- Machine various materials including steel, aluminium, brass, copper & various plastics.
- Select tooling, fixturing and machining parameters appropriate to material and specification.
- Monitor machining processes to ensure consistency, quality and efficiency.
- Carry out basic machine maintenance and report faults as required.
- Interpret engineering drawings, GD&T principles to machining, inspection and troubleshooting activities.
- Ensure that special and critical characteristics are identified and controlled.
- Perform in‑process and final inspection using conventional precision measuring equipment.
- Competent in the use of CMM equipment to inspect components against drawings.
- Record inspection results accurately and maintain traceable quality documentation.
- Support first article inspection (FAI) and corrective action activities as required.
- Contribute to root cause analysis and continuous improvement initiatives where appropriate.
- Work in compliance with ISO 9001 & AS9100 requirements.
- Maintain visibility and traceability of all work in progress.
- Adhere to all health and safety procedures.
- Maintain high standards of cleanliness to prevent contamination to conductive components.
- Participate in regular SQDCL meetings to report on metrics which impact machining operations, highlighting potential constraints.
General Requirements:
- Proven experience as a CNC and manual machinist in a precision manufacturing environment.
- CNC programming (Fanuc) experience desirable.
- CAD/CAM experience desirable.
- Demonstrable knowledge of tight tolerances, critical dimensions, and GD&T.
- Proficient in the use of precision measuring tools (micrometers, callipers, bore gauges, dial indicators, height gauges).
- Tool grinding experience desirable.
- Ability to work accurately from detailed engineering drawings.
- Excellent attention to detail with a strong emphasis on quality.
- Experience working within an ISO 9001 quality management system.
- Experience within an AS9100 / aerospace environment desirable.
- Familiarity with aerospace, automotive, or other safety‑critical components.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, managing multiple priorities and tight deadlines.
- Flexible approach to handling interruptions and changes to work schedules.
- Use PPE and follow safety procedures for rotating machinery.
- Accountable for achieving production efficiency targets.
- Employs the 5S & FOD principles daily and actively participates improving the 5S & FOD score for the site.
- Supporting customers when needed.
- Flexible with working hours & locations when required.
- Self-motivated with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively
- Strong problem-solving skills.
Qualifications & Competencies:
- Strong Knowledge of machining principles.
- Time‑served apprenticeship or recognised qualification in Machining, Mechanical or Manufacturing Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
- Good attention to detail, with high levels of accuracy & a commitment to quality
- Willingness to develop & grow professionally within the business.
- Clear oral and written communication skills.
- Excellent time management and organisational skills.
Physical Demands & Locations:
- Predominately a manufacturing and office environment however, there shall be the physical demands of working within cells, stores and shop floor areas. Whilst performing the physical duties of this role, the jobholder shall be required to be active through standing, walking, bending, carrying, and the possible use of hand tools/test equipment in accordance with site Manual Handling and Health & Safety Policy.
- Frequent use of hands and arms for fine manipulation, machine operation, and precision measurement.
- Visual awareness required for reading engineering drawings, CMM screens, and measuring instruments, including close‑up inspection of fine details.
- Ability to work in a manufacturing environment, with exposure to machine noise, cutting fluids, oils, and engineered materials, with appropriate PPE provided and required.
- From time to time, it may be necessary for the jobholder to undertake reasonable tasks on behalf of the company, which would not normally be regarded as part of the role. The jobholder shall carry these out to the best of their ability. To undertake ad hoc and other duties when requested by their departmental manager or a member of the senior management team.
- Work duties will require operating within various areas of the facility including but not limited to the stores & dispatch area, assembly/test area and machine/moulding area as required.
