Coast Guard Shipyard - Journeyman HVAC Mechanic/EMCS Technician (3+ years experience & license req)

The Journeyman HVAC Mechanic installs, maintains, and repairs environmental control systems across commercial and industrial facilities, applying expertise in refrigeration, pipefitting, and system layout. The role includes fabricating and assembling components, connecting mechanical and electrical systems, and ensuring proper system operation through testing, calibration, and troubleshooting. Additionally, the mechanic supports energy management systems by monitoring performance, adjusting controls, and ensuring systems operate efficiently and safely.

• Install, service, and repair HVAC and environmental-control systems in commercial and industrial facilities, following blueprints and specifications.
• Fabricate, assemble, and install ductwork, piping, and system components, including compressors, condensers, and evaporators.
• Perform piping and tubing work (cutting, bending, threading, joining) to complete refrigerant circuits and system installations.
• Install, maintain, and troubleshoot steam and high-temperature water systems.
• Connect and service electrical and control components, including motors, thermostats, breakers, and control panels.
• Charge systems with refrigerant, test for leaks, and monitor/adjust gauges and controls to ensure proper operation.
• Install and maintain filtration systems and insulation to support system efficiency and safety.
• Repair and service large-capacity HVAC units (15–20 tons).
• Operate and maintain Energy Management Control Systems (EMCS), including set points, alarms, sensors, VAV systems, and actuators.
• Ensure work meets quality standards and that specialized HVAC control work is performed by qualified technicians.
• Respond to customer inquiries and complaints.
• Must be able to work independently and as a team.
• All Other Duties/Projects as Assigned

Qualifications:

• A valid State of Maryland Journeyman HVAC license.
• Must have a CFC refrigeration certification.
• Minimum of 3 years’ direct experience working on commercial/Industrial heating/air conditioning/refrigeration systems/controls.
• Ability to work in a variety of different environments, including inclement weather and high man lifts.
• Ability to read and understand schematics, blueprints and Test and Balance Reports.
• Knowledge of refrigeration theory, pipefitting and structural layout, mount compressor and condenser units (on platform or floor).
• Knowledge of Metasys, Honeywell, LON, or Computrols, preferred.
• Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Must be able to prioritize tasks and work in a fast-paced environment.
• Must be able to provide customer service in a professional and courteous manner.
• Must have the ability and be willing to work outside of normal working hours such as back shift and weekends, in the event of unplanned outages.

Physical Requirements:

• Must be able to stand, walk, bend, crawl, reach, push, pull, and climb.
• Must be able to lift 50 lbs.

Security Requirements:

• Must have the ability to acquire Federal Security Clearance.
• Required drug screening, physical, and background check.

Driving Requirements:

• A valid state driver license is required. Must be able to obtain and maintain coverage by HMG’s insurance company.
