Primary Purpose
The Collection Development and Acquisitions Librarian is a full-time, tenure-track, nine-month faculty position responsible for COCC Library’s collection development. This position works closely with faculty to ensure that all curriculum areas and student research interests are represented in the Library’s print and nonprint collections.

This faculty position also teaches online and face to face credit information literacy courses and participates in the library’s information literacy programming.
The Collections Development and Acquisitions Librarian contributes to activities that support the Library’s mission, vision, and strategic plan and also strengthen its role as a cultural hub for the college and the broader community.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Lead the development, assessment, budgeting, and maintenance of all Library collections (print, digital, government documents, and campus branches), including vendor relations, licensing, policies, and consortial resources.
  • Collaborate with faculty and library staff on resource selection, weeding, instructional needs, and staying current with academic publishing trends.
  • Serve on the Library’s leadership team and represent COCC in the Orbis Cascade Alliance, contributing to planning, policy, outreach, and shared collection initiatives.
  • Oversee, manage, and support Technical Services operations and staff, working closely with Systems & Discovery to ensure smooth workflows.
  • Teach information literacy courses, provide research assistance, advise students, participate in assessment, professional development, community service, and college committees.

Individuals must possess the following knowledge, skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the duties and responsibilities of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.   • Demonstrated understanding of collection development and acquisitions principles.
  • Experience working with budgets and negotiating with vendors.
  • Experience using electronic collection development tools and an integrated library system.
  • Familiarity with emerging technologies as they relate to collection development and library services.
  • Familiarity with publishing industry.
  • Experience with concepts and goals of information literacy;
  • Ability to teach library classes in an academic environment and knowledge of instructional design principles in an online environment;
  • Willingness to travel and/or teach at various hours and locations, as required, at all COCC campuses.
  • Experience with library reference and search services;
  • Excellent analytical, interpersonal, and communication skills;
  • Professional initiative and flexibility and ability to exercise independent judgment and decision-making.
  • Ability to successfully lead and complete projects;
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate staff work including providing feedback;
  • Ability to juggle multiple tasks and commitments in an effective and timely manner;
  • Ability to work effectively and collegially with a diverse population;
  • Ability to be responsive to all students, faculty, and community employers as customers.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of records including student information and records.
  • Ability to effectively utilize common Microsoft applications (Word, PowerPoint, Excel) to communicate, gather data, and generate reports;
  • Ability to communicate fluently and effectively, both orally and in writing, using the English language.

Ergonomic Requirements
Ability to work in classroom and office environments using computers, white boards, projectors, and other basic office equipment. Computer screen is used more than 50 percent of the time. Physical movements involve guiding, feeding materials into proper position. Lifting objects vary daily, ranging from 1lb to 20lbs. All individuals are required to be able to perform the essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.

Minimum Requirements
Education:
  • Master’s Degree in Library Science (MLS or MLIS) from an ALA accredited institution required.
Experience:
  • Two years of recent experience working in libraries or an academic setting in higher education in the area of library Collection Development, Acquisitions, and/or Technical Services.
  • One year of library instruction experience.
