Job Overview:

  • The Commissioning Coordinator is responsible for the overall coordination and execution of project commissioning and start‑up deliverables to ensure equipment and systems are safe, functional, and ready for operation. The role focuses on planning, budget and deficiency management, and engagement with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Strong coordination of field commissioning activities is critical, with a clear emphasis on hands-on execution capability. This role requires prior experience working as a technician or engineer in the field, along with the ability to independently perform self‑commissioning tasks. The incumbent provides technical support throughout the commissioning phase, applying deep technical expertise to identify, troubleshoot, and resolve issues during startup.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical input into updating commissioning procedures, check sheets, and standards, supporting continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Participate in engineering design reviews (mechanical, process, electrical, and instrumentation) to ensure commissioning requirements are incorporated early in the project lifecycle.
  • Develop comprehensive commissioning and start‑up execution plans, including:
  • Resource and staffing requirements
  • Cost estimates and budget inputs
  • Detailed commissioning schedules
  • Ensure commissioning activities are executed in compliance with approved processes, procedures, scope, schedule, cost, quality, and safety expectations.
  • Coordinate and manage field commissioning activities for small to large projects, utilizing either third‑party specialized contractors or internal commissioning technicians.
  • Independently perform in‑house commissioning activities for small or core projects with Operations support, including:
  • Configuration and calibration
  • System startup and troubleshooting
  • Functional and performance testing
  • Apply hands‑on technical expertise to commission, wire, configure, and test:
  • PLCs and control systems
  • Instrumentation and analyzers
  • Control panels and MCCs
  • Communication and telemetry systems
  • Manage issues identified during the commissioning phase and resolve them using practical field-based and technical problem-solving skills.
  • Ensure proper handover of equipment from Construction to Commissioning, and from Commissioning to Operations, through structured walkthroughs, punch lists, and deficiency tracking.
  • Provide planning oversight for outage management associated with both greenfield and brownfield construction projects.
  • Schedule and coordinate activities to tight deadlines, ensuring safe work conditions at all times.
  • Effectively manage and execute work across multiple concurrent projects.

Scope/Dimensions:

  • Works closely with project teams, construction, and operations to ensure all issues are clearly defined, addressed, and resolved, resulting in safe and reliable operation.
  • Demonstrates strong understanding of industry safety practices, including:
  • Permitting requirements
  • Lock‑Out / Tag‑Out (LOTO)
  • Electrical safety standards
  • Holds strategic accountability for maintaining effective working relationships and performance with field services and commissioning contractors.
  • Provides direction, guidance, and technical influence over a specialized commissioning group without direct line authority.

  • Project teams and construction contractors for commissioning handovers
  • Third‑party commissioning contractors, when required
  • Operations teams during startup and system turnover

Reporting Relationships:

  • Direct Reports: None
  • Indirect Reports: Provides guidance and mentorship to Commissioning Coordinators and other team members or stakeholders
  • Dotted‑Line Reporting: Project Managers

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Technical College Diploma or Degree
  • Minimum 10 years of hands‑on technical experience in field-based roles
  • Strong working knowledge of relevant design and construction codes and standards, including:
  • API
  • NEC / CEC
  • CSA Z662
  • NFPA 11
  • Highly effective interpersonal and leadership skills, with the ability to independently lead or coordinate work across diverse teams, contractors, and stakeholders.

Preferred:

  • Prior commissioning experience in the oil & gas industry
  • Hands‑on experience with rotating and static equipment

Working Conditions:

  • Office-based role with frequent scheduled travel to construction sites across the U.S. pipeline system (approximately 20–30 days per quarter).
  • Project-driven work environment with periodic extended hours, including:
  • After-hours calls
  • Weekend or evening support (approximately 5–10 occurrences per quarter).
  • Occasional disruption to off-the-job personal activities due to project demands.
