POSITION DESCRIPTION FOR ST. CLAIR COUNTY SCHOOL SYSTEM

Communication Specialist

To assist the Superintendent or Designee with analyzing, organizing, and disseminating information and data regarding the school system to the news media, agencies, organizations, social media, and the public

Exempt Superintendent

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Bachelor's degree from an accredited educational institution, preferably in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or a similar area

2. Three (3) years of experience in public relations in education, public sector or private sector preferred

3. Ability to use technology to communicate, manage data, and produce/submit reports, correspondence, and/or school information

4. Demonstrates aptitude or competence for assigned responsibilities

5. Possess knowledge in Microsoft systems

6. Possess and maintain a valid driver's license

7. Ability to meet the suitability criteria for employment and/or certification licensure under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457

8. Ability to work collaboratively as a team member with large and/or diverse groups

9. Proficiency in oral, written, and electronic communications and able to use various technological devices/software

1a.Ability to be punctual in regular attendance

11. Ability and willingness to work a flexible schedule if needed

12. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board might find appropriate and acceptable

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Demonstrates support for the school system, its purpose, direction, and priorities.

2. Maintain open line of communications with administrators

3. Demonstrates the ability to multi-task and to prioritize tasks efficiently.

4. Maintains confidentiality of any Board of Education business, its staff, and its students.

5. Demonstrates and models regular and predictable attendance.

6. Demonstrates professional appearance and demeanor at all times.

7. Demonstrates ability to work in a constant state of alertness.

8. Proficient in digital media (including web content management), social media, and media relations

9. Proficient in the use of mass notification tools

10. Direct experience with electronic publication design and production

11. Oversees personnel for the digital communication team, including school-based web leaders and social media teams

12. Visit school and work sites

13. Develop and maintain strong relationships with the media and community stakeholders

14. Assist Superintendent or Designee in writing and distributing press releases that promote the programs and achievements of St. Clair County Schools

15. Manage social media for the district and supervise the social media presence of schools and affiliated clubs/teams

16. Assist Superintendent or Designee to plan and evaluate image development for the system and individual schools

17. Represent St. Clair County Schools at community meetings and events at the discretion of the Superintendent

18. Assist in crisis management communications

19. Coordinate video/audio broadcast at the discretion of the Superintendent or Designee

20. Conduct a needs assessment to determine an appropriate program for communications

21. Maintain and model high standards of professional conduct

22. Cooperates with district administrators and other staff members, as appropriate, in publicizing and promoting performances, exhibitions, displays, dedications, or special programs sponsored by the schools and open to the public

23. Before final publication, reviews and edits all district publications, which will be disseminated to the general public

24. Coordinate with Superintendent or Designee to expedite responses to inquiries and complaints received by the system from citizens, news media, and school personnel

25. Promotes recognition programs for employees and students

26. Cooperates with assistance on all city, state, and national campaigns and programs

27. Research and write articles and speeches as needed

28. Provides professional development training as required on public and community relations

29. Serves on school/system committees as required

30. Responds to inquiries and requests in a timely and positive manner

31. Adheres to school system rules, administrative procedures, local Board policies, and state, federal, and local laws

32. Operates school system owned vehicles in accordance with state and local laws, and school board policy

33.

Follows, observes, and reports all violations of the Board approved Data Governance Policy to ensure data security

34. Reports absences and takes leave in accordance with Board policies and procedures

35. Performs other job-related duties and tasks as directed by the Superintendent or Designee

SALARY: Based on the St. Clair County School System Salary Schedule 10 month Teacher Salary

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 10 month (202 Day)

EVALUATION: Performance will be evaluated according to board policy.
