Communications Specialist I

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

None.


SUMMARY

Under the general direction of the Communications Coordinator, coordinates planning, development, and implementation of communications and community relations activities to support Fresno EOC’s programs. This includes developing and executing strategic social media and digital initiatives, including creating awareness campaigns and integrating media into the overall outreach strategies. This position focuses on overall communications support.

Assist in the fulfillment of the Agency’s vision, “A strong Fresno County where people have resources to shape their future free from poverty.”


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Greets and communicates with public, employees, and vendors to answer questions, and disseminate information. Documents concerns and refers matters to Communication Coordinator.

Assists in drafting press releases, editorials, web content, web articles, and email newsletters. Disseminates information with approval from Communications staff.

Creates social media content, including graphics and actively grows social media presence by creating and posting value-driven content.

Seeks and identifies compelling program stories, to raise community awareness of Fresno EOC program services.

Plans, coordinates, and collaborates as needed with Fresno EOC staff and outside partners on assigned projects and events with strict deadlines and goals. Develops flyers and coordinates logistics. Keeps track of projects and reports progress.

Participates in and leads presentations, orientations, meetings, conference calls, as directed.

Collaborated with program staff to assist with program-marketing needs and/or to write, acquire, edit and approve content for agency website. Creates engaging, informational, flyers, graphics, presentations for programs, as needed.

Communicates with vendors to process orders.

Builds and maintains community connections to help push forward program initiatives.

Translates and/or coordinates translation of marketing materials into secondary language as needed.

Ensures confidentiality of participants, clients, programs, employees, co-workers, the agency and other related information.

Complies with all agency, state, and federal policies, procedures, protocols, and regulations.

Provides administrative support.

Updates marketing materials in Adobe Illustrator.

Attends and actively engages in staff meetings.

Travels on short notice for assignments between work locations within Agency service area and occasionally travels outside of Fresno County to attend meetings, conferences, participate in workshops, and conduct presentations.

Tracks and reports time spent on projects.

Travels for agency business using reliable transportation.

Maintains regular attendance and punctuality.

Works evenings and weekends as required.

Performs other duties as assigned.


QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION:

  • Associates Degree in Marketing, Graphic Design, Mass Communication, Journalism, Business Administration or related field, from an accredited college or university required. Additional work experience may substitute required education on a year-by-year basis.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum of one (1) year of related marketing, communications, or event planning, experience demonstrating the ability to perform the essential functions of this job required.
  • Six (6) months professional social media (Facebook, Instagram) experience required.


OTHER QUALIFICATIONS:

Proficient in Microsoft Office 365 and related business software. Adobe Creative Suite knowledge preferred (Illustrator, InDesign).

Ability to connect with, convince and elicit action from an audience.

Knowledge of administrative and clerical procedures and systems such as word processing, managing files (digital) and records, and other office procedures.

Fluent (speak, read, and write) in a secondary language preferred.

Must possess strong written and verbal communication skills and effective presentation skills.

Problem solver, critical thinker, self-starter and able to identify and complete projects to specifications on time and with minimal supervision.

Proven record of helping others and making a positive impact in our community.

Willing to work non-traditional hours and days to meet the needs of this position.

Maintain valid California driver's license and the minimum auto insurance as required by state law, or reliable transportation. For those driving agency vehicles, must maintain insurability under agency policy.
