Communications Strategist

Reports To: Campaign Manager

Status: Full-Time, Exempt

Salary: $70,000 - $75,000

The Communications Strategist, under general supervision, is responsible for producing and coordinating the dissemination of a variety of information to communicate IVEJ’s message, activities, programs to the public, governmental and private agencies, vendors and contractors; researches, writes, edits, compiles and designs art and copy layout for communications media such as newsletters, videos, announcements, and other public relations materials to engage supporters, raise awareness, and promote advocacy efforts. The Communication Strategist will play a key role in increasing the visibility and impact of IVEJ’s programs and campaigns, while building a growing online community of supporters and strengthening relationships with media.

Key Responsibilities

Develop and execute digital strategies to mobilize supporters, encourage advocacy actions, and increase engagement with key campaigns and initiatives; manage and grow IVEJ’s digital community across platforms, including social media, email newsletters, and other online channels; cultivate online relationships with existing and new supporters through interactive engagement (e.g., responding to messages, initiating conversations, and encouraging participation in online actions); develop strategies to recruit, onboard, and retain online volunteers, activists, and donors; track and report on engagement metrics, and use data to inform strategies for improving supporter engagement and digital advocacy.

Research, write, edit, compile, and design compelling, mission-driven content for IVEJ’s digital and communications media, including art and copy layouts, social media posts, blog articles, videos, and email newsletters; work closely with the IVEJ team to ensure a consistent and strategic message across all digital platforms; use storytelling techniques and data-driven content to highlight the impact of IVEJ’s work and encourage participation and donations; design and implement social media campaigns, fundraising appeals, advocacy actions, and event promotions; ensure that all digital content aligns with IVEJ’s tone, mission, and strategic goals.

Oversee the organization’s social media presence on platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and others, ensuring timely and engaging content; develop social media strategies to raise awareness about key issues, drive engagement, and expand IVEJ’s online community; monitor social media trends, conversations, and analytics to inform the organization’s approach and capitalize on opportunities; respond to inquiries, comments, and messages across social media platforms, fostering a sense of community and collaboration.

Plan, create, and manage email campaigns that include fundraising appeals, advocacy actions, event promotions, and general updates for supporters; segment email lists to ensure targeted, personalized outreach and increased engagement; use email marketing platforms (e.g., Mailchimp) to design visually appealing, effective email content; track open rates, click-through rates, and other metrics, adjusting strategies to improve the effectiveness of email campaigns.

Collaborate with the Campaign Manager (or team) to design digital advocacy campaigns, encouraging online actions like petitions, calls to action, and event participation; leverage digital tools (e.g., petitions, online surveys, live-streaming) to engage audiences in advocacy efforts and mobilize collective action; track campaign results and analyze data to assess the effectiveness of digital organizing and advocacy efforts, providing recommendations for future campaigns.

Use analytics tools (e.g., Google Analytics, social media insights) to track digital campaign performance, website traffic, and engagement metrics; report regularly on the effectiveness of digital campaigns, identifying successes and areas for improvement; adjust strategies based on data analysis and insights to optimize engagement, visibility, and campaign outcomes.

Work with teams to write press releases, letters to the editor, opinion editorials (op-eds), and comments to journalists on ongoing initiatives. Foster communication and relationships with journalists. Serve as the initial point of contact for press inquiries, assess and route requests to the appropriate staff member, campaign, or spokesperson, and support timely follow-up. Provide guidance and preparation support to staff and volunteers participating in media interviews, as needed.

Work closely with internal teams, including fund development and program staff, to integrate digital strategies across various organizational initiatives; collaborate with graphic designers, videographers, and other content creators to produce high-quality digital assets; support the creation of multimedia content such as videos, infographics, and graphics to be shared across digital channels.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience in digital media, communications, public relations, journalism or a related field, ideally within the nonprofit sector;
  • Strong understanding of digital communication tools, social media platforms, and online advocacy tactics;
  • Excellent writing, editing, and storytelling skills, with the ability to adapt messages for different digital platforms;
  • Familiarity with email marketing platforms (e.g., Mailchimp, Constant Contact), social media management tools (e.g., Hootsuite, Buffer), and website analytics (e.g., Google Analytics);
  • Experience with managing communications with the press
  • Knowledge of digital fundraising techniques and strategies for driving online donations;
  • Demonstrated success in building and growing online campaigns or communities;
  • Strong project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • A passion for the IVEJ’s mission and a deep understanding of the issues it advocates for.
  • A valid driver’s license issued by the State of California, Department of Motor Vehicles

Skills & Abilities

  • Proficiency in design software (e.g., Canva, Adobe Creative Suite) for creating social media graphics and digital content is a plus;
  • Ability to engage, motivate, and grow an online community of supporters and activists;
  • Strong problem-solving abilities and the capacity to quickly adapt strategies to changing circumstances;
  • Knowledge of SEO, digital fundraising, and advocacy best practices;
  • Strong attention to detail, ensuring that all digital content is accurate, on-brand, and effective;
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams, volunteers, and partners.
