Job description:

Job Purpose

To ensure the smooth and continuous operation of the gas and steam turbines, associated plant equipment and all related utility services in designated area of responsibility either in control room or in the field operations. To do so in a safe and efficient manner as instructed by the shift supervisor or the main control room.

Key Accountabilities
  • Is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of a pre-set number of Gas Turbines/Steam Turbines and Waste Heat Boilers and associated auxiliaries. Responsibilities also include all associated plant equipment and essential services in designated area of responsibility.
  • Is responsible for safe start up and shutdown of GT/ST and associated systems from the control room when assigned the duty
  • Is responsible for safe operation of Potline rectifier transformers from the control room
  • Is responsible under supervision and instruction of the system controller to communicate to the customers and attend to the issues arise on day-to-day basis.
  • Performs routine checks of all plant equipment that is in service and standby. Monitors various instrument readings to ensure that all parameters are within satisfactory limits.
  • Periodically assists the Supervisor and Power Operator in start-up, shut downs and isolating plant equipment for maintenance.
Operator Responsibilities
  • Ensures that all plant equipment under his control is operated in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Ensures that all instructions are carried out promptly and efficiently.
  • Records routine parameter readings in control room or in field on a regular basis and promptly reports deviations.
  • Informs the Supervisor or system controller of any abnormalities and problems on plant equipment.
  • Remains fully conversant with all emergency procedures related to the equipment in designated area of responsibility.
  • Adopts safe working practices to ensure personal and plant safety.
  • Assists in carrying out routine testing/re-commissioning of plant after maintenance outages.
  • Ensures standby equipment is readily available for service in an emergency.
  • Maintains high standards of housekeeping.
  • Carries out "on the job" training of his subordinates as and when required.
  • Strives to achieve increased competency.
Qualifications & Skills

Minimum Qualifications:

Diploma in Engineering or equivalent

Minimum Experience:

3 years' experience in the Operations department of a modern Power Station.

An Operator, Turbines & Boilers must be fully conversant and competent to work in the areas of Power Plant 1 or 2 as follows:

Power Plant 1
  • Boiler Common Services (de-aerators, feed pumps, dosing,etc)
  • Gas Turbines - FR5, FR9B, 13D (all associated equipment)
  • Waste Heat Boilers.(including main steam header)
  • Steam Turbine 14 (all associated equipment)
  • Compressor House & Firewater pumps.
Power Plant 2
  • Gas Turbines - FR9E (all associated equipment)
  • Waste Heat Boilers (including steam header & process steam)
  • Steam Turbines 16 & 18 (all associated equipment)
  • Desiccant Dryer House (including GT air coolers & cooling system)
  • Sea Water Pumps & Chlorination Plant
Power Plant 1A (3)
  • Gas turbines 21, 22 & 23 (3 units).
  • Waste heat Boilers 21, 22 & 23 (3 units).
  • Steam turbine 22 and associated Demin Plant
  • CCPP-22 Gas skid
  • GT 23 Gas skid
  • PL 7 Rectifier transformers
  • PL 9 Rectifier transformers
  • Compressed Air house 7B
