OVERVIEW
Provides both hands-on general accounting support and overall management of non-profit financials. The Controller contributes to the organization’s mission by overseeing all accounting and financial operations of the organization. This senior level position directs and supervises the Assistant Controller-Stores, General Accountant and Senior Finance and Accounting Specialist and provides consultation to Board of Directors and Executive Director/CEO on strategic accounting matters, financial performance and budget. This position plays a leadership role in developing a positive culture with a focus on accuracy.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Prepare and/or review financial statements, including balance sheets, income statements and cash flow statements, to provide accurate and timely financial information to management and stakeholders.

Responsible for the management and oversight, as well as hands-on execution of the month-end, quarterly and year-end closing processes, including the review and approval of journal entries and account reconciliations.

Coordinate with the Director of Development and Director of Vincentian Services to ensure accounting for donor funds is appropriate.

Oversee the preparation for, management and coordination of all external audits, working closely with auditors and the Audit Committee to prepare necessary documentation and resolve any audit issues.

Develop, establish and maintain internal controls to safeguard the organization’s assets and ensure compliance with financial regulations and accounting standards.

Oversee the budgeting and forecasting processes, collaborating with various departments to ensure financial goals are met; assist with interim budget reviews.

The Controller reports to the Director of Finance with a dotted line to the Executive Director/CEO, and is responsible for and provides guidance, leadership, and training to the accounting team.

Assist in strategic initiatives or special projects as needed. Examples include ERP evaluation/implementation and the consolidation of financial information to mirror the audited financials.

Contributes to the development and execution of the organization’s financial strategy.

Responsible for developing and maintaining accounting policies and procedures, ensuring compliance with professional standards, state and federal regulatory requirements.

Assist in presenting financial reporting and potential risk areas to senior management and board members.

Ensure compliance with all tax regulations and coordinate with the outside professional service firms regarding the preparation and filing of tax returns (Form 990 and 1099s).

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

Bachelor’s degree in accounting/finance with a minimum of 8 years’ experience or any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities, including financial reporting & analysis, budgets and project management experience

CPA strongly preferred.

Experience in the non-profit sector and/or retail industry is strongly preferred.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIREMENTS
Knowledge of:

GAAP (Advanced Level) and regulations affecting charities.

Theories, principles, methods and procedures of professional accounting (Comprehensive level)

Financial reporting & analysis, budget and project management

Advanced MS Office skills (Expert level in Excel) required, and knowledge of QuickBooks preferred
