This is a highly responsible position in the Justice and Public Safety Cabinet. The employee is expected to perform all duties to the best of their ability, act in a responsible manner at all times, demonstrate leadership qualities, and treat all staff, youth, and persons with respect. This is a demanding position that requires maturity, reliability, and self-discipline. Career growth and advancement are encouraged through training and mentoring opportunities.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Provides research, curriculum development and instruction in correctional security, treatment, legal issues, operations, health and safety areas and other related areas.
• Conducts research and develops instructional materials, lesson plans and other curriculum for Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) training.
• Plans and organizes training events for DJJ staff.
• Provides input into the development of the annual training plans in facilities, calendars and other training documents.
• Provides in-service training and academy training.
• Submits training and progress reports and provides feedback regarding staff training performance. Completes all related documentation as required.
• Statewide travel will be required to provide/conduct training.
• Certification will be required and maintained for multiple training courses - this includes behavior management techniques that covers staff self-protection and physical restraint.
• Candidate must become Oleoresin Capsicum (OC spray) certified.
• Candidates must obtain Taser certification.

Statewide travel will be required to conduct training programs.

Probationary Period

This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
