Consultant / Senior Resident – Critical Care Specialist (Intensivist)

Job Purpose:
To lead and manage the ICU, provide round-the-clock expert care to critically ill patients, coordinate with multidisciplinary teams, and ensure adherence to evidence-based critical care protocols for improved patient outcomes.
Key Responsibilities:
1. ICU Patient Management
- Take complete responsibility for assessment, diagnosis, and management of all ICU patients.
- Conduct daily clinical rounds, review patient progress, and modify treatment plans as required.
- Optimize hemodynamic, respiratory, renal, and metabolic parameters of ICU patients.
- Provide advanced ventilator management (invasive & non-invasive).
- Manage complex conditions including septic shock, multi-organ dysfunction, ARDS, acute cardiac events, neurological emergencies, and trauma.
2. Critical Care Procedures
- Perform or supervise ICU procedures:
- Endotracheal intubation & airway management
- Central venous catheterization
- Arterial line insertion
- Tracheostomy (surgical/percutaneous) assistance
- Chest tube insertion
- Bedside ultrasound, echocardiography, and hemodynamic monitoring
- Dialysis catheter insertion for CRRT/HD patients
3. Emergency Response
- Lead Code Blue and resuscitation efforts.
- Provide Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and trauma resuscitation.
- Support ER and wards for rapid response to deteriorating patients.
4. Multidisciplinary Coordination
- Collaborate with surgeons, anesthetists, physicians, and other specialists for integrated patient care.
- Coordinate with physiotherapists, dietitians, and nursing for holistic recovery plans.
- Liaise with microbiology for targeted antibiotic stewardship.
5. Family & Patient Communication
- Conduct daily family counseling sessions to explain patient status, prognosis, and treatment plans.
- Handle difficult conversations empathetically and professionally.
6. Quality, Safety & Protocol Compliance
- Implement ICU protocols, bundles, and checklists as per NABH/JCI guidelines (e.g., VAP bundle, CLABSI prevention, sepsis protocol).
- Ensure strict infection control practices.
- Participate in morbidity & mortality meetings and root cause analysis.
- Monitor ICU KPIs: mortality rate, length of stay, infection rates, and unplanned extubations.
7. Academic & Training Responsibilities
- Conduct bedside teaching for residents, nurses, and paramedics.
- Organize simulation-based training for BLS, ACLS, and airway management.
- Participate in CME programs and case discussions.
8. Administrative & On-Call Duties
- Maintain ICU census, handover notes, and progress documentation.
- Ensure optimal allocation of ICU beds based on triage protocols.
- Participate in on-call duties as per roster.
Qualifications & Experience:
- MD/DNB in Anesthesiology, Pulmonary Medicine, or Internal Medicine with Fellowship/DM in Critical Care Medicine.
- Minimum 3–5 years ICU experience in a tertiary care setup.
- ACLS/BLS certification mandatory.
