POSITION SUMMARY:
The Refining Technology group seeks to create maximum value for our shareholders through pro-active unit optimization and achieve “best in class” performance based upon yields, profitability, reliability, safety and environmental compliance. Refining Technology provides technical expertise, operational support, commercial support, process optimization, new technology development and process design support to Marathon’s refinery system.
The Crude & Vacuum Technologist will report to the Crude & Heavy Oil Technology Director and be based in the Findlay, Ohio office. Alternative locations will be considered by exception. The Technologist role is the main conduit for identifying and implementing projects and processes to improve unit operation and performance. The Technologist will lead the Crude & Vacuum advisory group along with the Technology Director and work with external licensors and vendors with the purpose of identifying innovation opportunities, sharing best practice and driving refinery performance.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Lead the Crude & Vacuum Advisory group along with the Technology Director through developing and implementing a technology business plan and best practices to drive refinery performance. Conduct annual Unit Reviews for all locations to assess progress in achieving goals and develop scorecard to monitor progress. Mentor engineers at all sites, providing them with consistent tools and training to improve their professional growth. Oversee annual Face to Face and monthly discussion forums with both process and operations groups.
  • Identify projects and process opportunities to improve refinery performance, reliability and profitability.
  • Support the Major Refinery Projects through new technology evaluation, conceptual design and procedural advice. Work as advisor with Project Teams.
  • Supporting various Turnaround activities and improvement projects. Provide assistance with work scope definitions, inspections, procedural writing, startups and troubleshooting and/or on-site assistance.
  • Providing metric information through the KPI reports, performance monitors, monthly and weekly reports.
  • Providing optimization and troubleshooting recommendations through on-site versus off-site troubleshooting.
  • Ensuring performance consistency through monitoring, counseling, and CPVs.
  • Develop Standards (RSPs) and Reference Documents (RRDs) as necessary to drive unit performance and standardization.
  • Represent Marathon on industry safety teams and organizations including CCQA sub-committee.
  • Assist Government Affairs in reviewing legislative issues.
  • Work cooperatively with chemical vendors. Manage corporate relationship with Baker and help direct their activities to maximize effectiveness.
  • Provide technical review and coordination of consultant activities and purchase/use of software tools.
  • Evaluate new technology by attending various Industry meetings, reviewing technical and vendor literature, and networking.
  • Develop appropriate alliances with technology licensors and equipment vendors which show a clear return and keep management apprised of the financial performance of these alliances.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Bachelor's degree in chemical engineering required.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience is required.
  • Technical and operational expertise in process technologies.
  • Operations experience including startup, shutdown, optimization and troubleshooting preferred.
  • Valid driver's license is required.
  • Location: Findlay, San Antonio or Refinery location
  • Travel: 20-40% estimated.
