The Comprehensive Training Unit (CTU) Curriculum Designer collaborates with law enforcement subject matter experts to develop and enhance training programs for APD officers. This role is responsible for creating comprehensive instructional materials—including lesson plans, presentations, handouts, practical exercises, reality-based scenarios, participant guides, and assessments—while ensuring all training aligns with APD policy, applicable laws, and recognized law enforcement best practices.

The Curriculum Designer manages multiple projects simultaneously, balancing shifting priorities and diverse deadlines. Success in this role requires strong collaboration with both sworn and civilian personnel, effective communication, attention to detail, and a commitment to delivering high-quality, service-oriented training solutions.

Supervision Received and Exercised

Reports to the Comprehensive Training Unit Manager.

Essential and Supplemental Functions

1. Maintain a workload of three to four projects simultaneously in addition to special projects assigned by the Comprehensive Training Manger.

2. Collaborate with APD subject matter experts to develop and revise training.

3. Create lesson plans, PowerPoints, and other course materials in accordance with established CTU practices.

4. Ensure that all training materials comply with APD policy, local, state, and federal law, and law enforcement best practices.

5. Copyedit and format all course materials created.

6. Manage and meet timelines for curriculum development.

7. Track and document course development and evaluation.

8. Create and maintain course materials in an APD internal database and in a dedicated learning management system.

9. Upload materials to online platforms for delivery of training electronically.

10. Work with the Comprehensive Training Manager to strategize annual curriculum review and approval processes.

11. Participate in special projects as needed.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Education and experience directly related to the minimum requirements below may be interchangeable on a year-for-year basis.

A master’s degree from an accredited college and two (2) years of work experience in instructional design, learning science and research, or business operations.

Additional Requirements:
Possession of a valid New Mexico Driver's License or the ability to obtain by date of hire.

Required Knowledge

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including copyediting.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of adult learning theory, training, and delivery utilizing methodologies such as the ADDIE instructional design model.
  • Ability to coordinate, organize, and balance work while handling multiple deadline-driven processes.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with sworn and civilian colleagues.

Preferred Skills

  • Knowledge of law enforcement practices.
  • Knowledge of pertinent federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations.

Working Conditions

Office, classroom and small and large meeting rooms. Essential and supplemental functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for sitting for prolonged periods of time, extensive use of computer keyboard.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $65,000.00 per year
