UNCOMN is seeking a Data Engineer 2-3 to:
- Design, build, and enhance data pipelines, architectures, and datasets to meet business needs.
- Develop and implement complex data models, management systems, and storage/streaming solutions that support distributed, real-time, and fault-tolerant processing.
- Write efficient code and advanced queries (including subqueries and window functions) for data processing and analysis.
- Build detailed use cases and gather business and technical requirements to guide engineering solutions.
- Establish data architecture standards, including schema design, metadata strategy, and integration best practices.
- Support data governance by cataloging enterprise data assets, ensuring discoverability, quality, lineage tracking, and compliance with zero-trust and security policies.
- Partner with stakeholders to enforce cataloging, tagging, and classification standards across structured and unstructured sources.

Requirements
- This is an on-site position at Norfolk Naval Base. Must be able to work on-site with minimal exceptions.
- 3+ years of related data engineering experience.
- Must be eligible to obtain a Secret clearance, granted by the US Government, which requires US citizenship. The government also uses 13 adjudicative guidelines to determine an individual's eligibility.
- Proven experience with Relational SQL and NoSQL databases, as well as object-oriented and functional programming languages.
- Proficiency in Python (preferred), Scala, or Java is expected, with additional experience in R, Go, or C++ considered a strong asset. Familiarity with scripting languages (e.g., Bash, PowerShell) and modern data-centric frameworks such as Spark, PySpark, or Hadoop ecosystems is highly desirable.
- Experience gathering requirements from stakeholders and translating them into actionable use cases and data engineering solutions.
- Experience designing data architectures supporting security, compliance, and discoverability.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
- Active DoD (Top) Secret clearance, granted by the U.S. Government.
- Prior experience with the Advana tool suite, Qlik Sense, and/or Databricks.
- Prior experience with Maven Smart System (MSS) or Palantir Foundry.
- Hands-on experience with enterprise metadata cataloging tools (e.g., Collibra, AWS Glue Data Catalog, Unity Catalog, or equivalent).
- Experience leading or contributing to data governance initiatives, especially within federal or defense environments.
- Familiarity or hands-on experience with AI tools such as AWS SageMaker, Palantir AIP, DataRobot or similar.
- Understanding of cloud concepts, preferably related to migrating to a cloud environment.
