Design Technologist, Electronic Shelf Labels - Grocery In-Store

India

DESCRIPTION

Electronic Shelf Labels (ESLs) are wireless, battery-powered e-ink displays used in retail stores to showcase product attributes such as pricing, promotions, and availability. They play a critical role in merchandising products while keeping the shopping experience simple and seamless.

As the ESL Tech team, we build and maintain the infrastructure that delivers real-time product updates — including prices, promotions, and other key information — directly to ESLs. Our mission is to bridge physical retail with digital convenience, improving operational efficiency for retailers and enhancing the shopping experience for customers.

As a Design Technologist on the ESL team, you will work closely with UX designers and engineers to transform design concepts into functional ESL templates across Amazon Fresh, Amazon Go, and Whole Foods Market stores. You’ll use a third-party design tool to bring ideas to life, often pushing the limits of what the tooling allows. With a maker’s mindset, you’ll experiment, tinker, and think creatively to solve problems. You will deliver quickly and iteratively, with a sharp attention to detail, ensuring the templates are both functional and polished.

Key job responsibilities
  • Partner with UX designers to evaluate technical feasibility of template designs, identifying potential logic and complexity challenges early in the development process
  • Transform UX designer mocks and Figma designs into production-ready templates using the third-party design tool
  • Implement template logic for data field manipulation, including conversion, visibility rules, and conditional display
  • Collaborate with Software Development Engineers (SDE) and Front-End Engineers (FEE) to ensure proper data integration and template functionality
  • Own the template validation process, coordinating with both design and development teams for approval
  • Support template deployment to production environments in partnership with the development team
  • Serve as the primary owner of the template lifecycle, streamlining the transition from design to production

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • 3+ years of front-end technologist, engineer, or UX prototyper experience
  • Have coding samples in front end programming languages
  • Have an available online portfolio
  • Experience with web, mobile web, or mobile app front-end development
  • Experience with UI design for complex workflows and for end users
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Knowledge of technologies such as JavaScript/NodeJS, HTML/CSS, Responsive/Adaptive Design
  • Knowledge of Python, Javascript, and source control (Git)
