DESK ASSISTANT/PAGE - CIRCULATION DEPARTMENT - LAWSON MCGHEE LIBRARY

Purpose of Job

The purpose of this classification is to perform a variety of tasks related to library patron services. This position is full-time.

Essential Functions

The Desk Assistant/Page is responsible for the following essential functions:

• Performs all tasks necessary for shelving and organization of library materials


• Perform circulation functions on internal database


• Assists patrons in using public access catalog and in locating materials/information


• Retrieves materials to fill patron requests and processes appropriately


• Answers phone calls and replies to emails from public


• Monitors stock on shelves and ensures materials are correctly shelved


• Retrieves materials to fill patron requests and process appropriately

Additional Job Functions

• Respond to and report immediately if called upon by local, regional or central office supervisors, as part of a coordinated emergency response by the Knox County Mayor’s Office


• Perform other duties as required

Minimum Training & Qualifications

• High School diploma or GED required: Associates degree preferred


• Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered for employment into the position

• Ensure regular, punctual attendance during scheduled work hours


• Basic understanding of computers, printers and other office equipment


• Ability to focus and demonstrate great attention to detail


• Ability to work cooperatively as a member of a team


• Excellent customer service skills

Physical Requirements

This position requires the ability to engage in occasional light physical activity. Ability to stand for extended periods of time. Ability to discern colors.

• Monday 8:30 am - 5:30 pm


• Tuesday 11:00 am - 8:00 pm


• Wednesday 11:00 am - 8:00 pm


• Thursday 8:30 am - 5:30 pm


• Friday 8:30 am - 5:30 pm


• Weekends in rotation (approximately two weekend days per month)
