Developmental English Adjunct Instructor

Position Summary

The Developmental English Adjunct Instructor is responsible for the planning, preparation, presentation, and evaluation of classroom instruction and related activities. They will provide competent classroom and laboratory instruction in the area of credentialed expertise. The Instructor will adhere to the general and adjunct faculty guidelines as specified by the Alabama Community College System Board of Trustees and the Drake State Community and Technical College Personnel Handbook.

This is a "continuous" posting and does not have a closing date. Applications are continuously accepted and candidates are interviewed and hired based on the need of the College.

Salary: Appropriate placement of Local Salary Schedule "L" at $35.00 per contact hour


Salary step placement is based on education and experience per Drake State’s practice for awarding salary step credit.

Work Hours
: Classes are taught day, evening, and weekends on the Huntsville campus. In addition, multiple forms of distance education are offered.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: The English Instructor shall perform the duties as specified in conformity with policies established by the Alabama Community College System Board of Trustees and the J.F. Drake State Community and Technical College Faculty and Staff Handbook.


  • Provide quality classroom instruction in the area of developmental English
  • Provide quality instruction in the area of developmental education or adult education, as assigned, and teaching online
  • Inform students concerning course requirements, evaluation procedures, attendance requirements, and academic progress
  • Seek continuous improvement in curriculum, instruction, and resources
  • Participate fully in the institutional planning process and assist in carrying out the overall instructional mission of the College
  • Prepare and grade assignments, projects, and examinations as required
  • Assist in registration and pre-registration activities as needed
  • Maintain an inventory of assigned equipment and supplies
  • Serve on college committees and teams when requested
  • Teach at varied times, locations, formats based on student demand, day, evening or weekend, traditional classroom, hybrid, or online
  • Submit required reports to the Division Chair, Assistant Dean of Instruction, or Dean of Instruction
  • Inform students of educational and occupational opportunities
  • Provide a proper instructional environment and maintain good human relations in the classroom and online so that learning is effective, engaging and promotes student success
  • Participate in faculty and professional organizations
  • Participate in recruitment, retention, and outreach activities as needed
  • Recommend library books and other instructional materials
  • Retain and submit documentation as requested to support accreditation efforts
  • Perform other work-related responsibilities as assigned by the Division Chair, Assistant Dean of Instruction, Dean of Instruction, and/or the President

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution with twenty-seven (27) semester hours in English or education
  • Minimum of one (1) year of full-time teaching experience in developmental and/or college level English
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, other employees, and the public
  • Ability to project a professional and congenial demeanor
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to use basic computer skills (Microsoft Office Suite, Banner, CANVAS, etc.)
  • Experience in tutoring or other learning assistance services

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Minimum of a Master’s degree with (18) graduate semester hours in the teaching field from a regionally accredited institution
  • Graduate work in developmental studies or adult education
  • Excellent oral, auditory, and written communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Working knowledge of outcome-based programs and student learning methodologies
  • Documented successful experience teaching and developing web-based courses
