Director of Communications

The Director of Communications & Community Relations serves as the primary communications, marketing, and public engagement professional for the Douglas County District Attorney’s Office. This position is responsible for developing and implementing strategic communications and community outreach initiatives that promote transparency, public trust, and awareness of the Office’s programs and services.


The Director manages the Office’s public messaging, media relations, digital presence, and community partnerships while supporting the Office’s mission of seeking justice with excellence and integrity. The position acts as a representative of the District Attorney’s Office to the public, media, and partner organizations.

Duties and Responsibilities
Communications & Media Relations

· Serve as the public information officer for the District Attorney’s Office.

· Draft, edit, and distribute news releases, public statements, and official correspondence with assistance from the Executive Assistant and District Attorney.

· Coordinate interviews, press conferences, and public announcements.

· Develop and execute strategic communication plans related to office initiatives and programs.

· Monitor and evaluate communication trends to enhance messaging effectiveness and public engagement.

Digital Media & Website Management

· Manage and maintain the Office’s official social media platforms.

· Create and publish digital content informing the public about initiatives, events, and services.

· Maintain and update the Office’s official website to ensure information is current and accessible.

· Track analytics and engagement metrics to evaluate communication effectiveness.

Community Outreach & Partnerships

· Represent the District Attorney’s Office at community meetings and events and coordinate volunteers for office table at events.

· Develop and maintain partnerships with community organizations, schools, businesses, and government agencies.

· Coordinate and organize community education programs and awareness campaigns.

· Coordinate office representation at community events and setting up office booth or table.

· Plan and execute public events and presentations hosted by the Office.

Internal Communication & Program Support

· Program management of interns and on-boarding process.

· Coordinate internal communication regarding upcoming events and initiatives.

· Assist staff with development of presentation materials for court, trainings, and community engagements.

· Support office initiatives through marketing and outreach efforts.

Minimum Qualifications

· Ability to collaborate and coordinate with executive-level staff.

· Strong writing, editing, and public speaking skills.

· Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information professionally.

· Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

· Proficient in PowerPoint, social media, and graphics creation.

Preferred Qualifications

· Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, journalism, marketing, public administration, or related field.

· Experience in communications, public relations, media relations, marketing, or government communications.

· Experience working in government, legal, law enforcement, or criminal justice settings.

· Public Information Officer (PIO) or communication experience preferred.

· Experience managing organizational social media accounts and website content.

· Experience planning community outreach programs or public events.

· Graphic design, photography, or video production experience.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

· Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

· Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills.

· Ability to communicate complex legal information clearly to the public.

· Professional judgment and discretion when communicating about sensitive matters.

· Proficiency in social media platforms and standard office software including Adobe, Canva, Microsoft Office, and other products.

· Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends for community events.

Physical & Work Requirements

· Primarily office-based work with regular attendance at community events and meetings, including outside traditional office hours.

· May require standing for extended periods during events and presentations.

Occasional travel within Douglas County and surrounding areas
