+ Position Description

Trinity Church seeks a dedicated and experienced Director of Human Resources to oversee all aspects of human resource management, supporting our staff and volunteer teams in fulfilling our mission. The ideal candidate will be a strong professional who can balance strategic HR initiatives with the day-to-day administrative needs of a growing faith-based organization, ensuring compliance with all applicable laws while fostering a positive, mission-driven work environment. This role reports to the Executive Pastor.

+ Key Responsibilities

HR Strategy and Compliance

  • Develop, implement, and maintain HR policies and procedures compliant with federal, state, and local employment laws (specifically those governing non-profit and religious organizations in Virginia).
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for all HR-related legal compliance matters.
  • Manage employee records, ensuring confidentiality, accuracy, and adherence to retention guidelines.
  • Collaborate with the Executive Pastor and leadership team on organizational structure.

Recruitment and Onboarding

  • Oversee the full-cycle recruiting process for all paid positions, including job descriptions, postings, candidate screening, interviewing, and offer letters.
  • Ensure a smooth and welcoming onboarding process for new employees and key volunteers, including background checks, orientation, and integration into the church culture and mission.

Compensation and Benefits Administration

  • Administer all employee benefit programs, including health insurance, retirement plans, and paid time off (PTO).
  • Manage the semi-monthly payroll process in coordination with the Finance Department, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
  • Conduct regular compensation analyses to ensure competitive and equitable pay structures.

Employee Relations and Performance Management

  • Oversee the annual performance review process.
  • Foster a culture of open communication, respect, and continuous improvement.
  • Conduct Exit Interviews in accordance with Trinity Church’s policy.

Training and Development

  • Identify staff training needs and coordinate professional development opportunities.
  • Implement training on HR topics such as workplace conduct, anti-harassment, etc.

+ Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive HR experience, with at least 2 years in a management or leadership role.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of federal and Virginia employment laws (e.g., FMLA, FLSA, EEO, VEC).
  • Proven experience with HRIS management, payroll administration, and benefits management.
  • Experience with Quickbooks Online for posting bimonthly wages and benefits.
  • Knowledge of Google Platform.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, interpersonal, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Must be a self-starter with exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Must be a committed Christian who actively attends and supports the mission and theological distinctives of Trinity Church.

Preferred

  • HR Certification (SHRM-SCP, SHRM-CP, SPHR, or PHR).
  • Experience working in a non-profit organization or church environment.
  • Familiarity with the unique employment considerations for clergy and church staff.

+ Expectations

This is a full-time, exempt position based at the Trinity Church campus in Virginia Beach, VA. The role requires a standard Monday-Friday schedule with occasional evenings or weekends as needed for church events or critical HR matters. There may also be occasional travel required to support Trinity’s campuses outside of Hampton Roads.

Reporting to the Executive Pastor, the Director of HR will also work closely with the Directors of Finance and IT. They must be willing to support the leadership decisions of the Elder Board and participate in regular performance reviews

Pay: $75,000.00 - $85,000.00 per year
