Primary Purpose:


The Director of School Improvement provides leadership and oversight in curriculum, instruction, assessment, and accountability across secondary campuses. This role ensures that instructional practices are aligned with district standards and initiatives, monitors student learning through effective assessment systems, and supports campus leaders and educators in using data to drive decisions that improve student outcomes. The director collaborates with district and campus leadership teams to implement school improvement strategies, strengthen teacher effectiveness, and promote academic success for all students.


Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

Master’s degree in educational administration

Valid Texas principal certification or equivalent


Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Demonstrated competency in coordinating statewide accountability and data management systems.
  • Proven expertise in school improvement initiatives and state/federal accountability systems.
  • Knowledge and experience with Eduphoria! and similar instructional/data management platforms.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage staff, multiple projects, and complex initiatives effectively.
  • Knowledge of advanced instructional design and delivery systems to support teacher and student success.
  • Ability to analyze data and make actionable recommendations to inform program and instructional design.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated expertise in facilitating teams, groups, and professional learning communities.
  • Proficiency with standard electronic applications, including Google Workspace, Microsoft Office (word processing, spreadsheets), and email communication.
  • Knowledge of state and federal legislative mandates regarding district and campus accountability measures and planning requirements.
  • Ability to design, develop, implement, and assess strategic planning tools to support school and district improvement.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with administrators, teachers, staff, and the general public.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to address diverse audiences for a variety of purposes.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to plan, prioritize, and implement districtwide professional learning and training initiatives.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills to build relationships and facilitate productive collaboration across campuses and departments.


Experience:

  • Minimum of 5 years of campus leadership experience
  • Minimum of 5 years of central office level leadership experience

Major Responsibilities and Duties: Program Management

In collaboration with the Division of Academics team, the Director of School Improvement provides leadership and strategic direction for school improvement, curriculum, instruction, assessment, monitoring, accountability, and data management operations. This role is responsible for implementing initiatives and systems that enhance overall district, campus, staff, and student achievement. The director ensures alignment of instructional practices and assessment strategies with district goals, supports campus leadership teams in analyzing data to drive decisions, and promotes continuous improvement to maximize student outcomes.


  • Prepare and explain program data reports for administrative and instructional staff.
  • Provide direction for implementation of instructional strategies for school improvement through coordinated efforts in the district improvement plan, the district strategic plan, and campus improvement plans.
  • Support the district’s efforts to achieve and maintain institutional effectiveness, ensuring compliance with educational requirements.
  • Develop and implement staff training and technical assistance for all assigned areas to address instructional and data needs.
  • Direct and coordinate district and campus data evaluations, and compliance reports in collaboration with other departments, as necessary.
  • Provide leadership for district and campus staff in developing action plans to address areas needing improvement.
  • Maintain documentation of all program activities and ensure confidentiality procedures are enforced for all data transmissions.
  • Work collaboratively with other departments to strengthen data management, analysis and implementation systems.
  • Maintain current with all state and federal assessment and accountability systems.
  • Make critical decisions that limit risk/exposure for the district.
  • Develop programs which are cost-effective and within budget guidelines.
  • Require many non-routine decisions concerning program priorities.
  • Maintain awareness of program needs and suggest methods of improvement.
  • Work with minimal supervision and direction.
  • Update knowledge of programs and tools related to assessments and evaluations.
  • Make routine decisions related to areas of responsibility.
  • Maintain awareness of staff concerns and program needs and suggest methods for improvement.
  • Seek out professional learning opportunities that enhance self and program.
  • Plan collaboratively with district staff to develop long-range planning processes and performance outcome measures.

COMMUNICATION/HUMAN RELATIONS

20. Maintain a high level of customer service skills: courtesy, patience, and diplomacy at all times, in particular, when under stressful or unprecedented situations in dealing with district and campus staff, and other stakeholders.

21. Maintain regular, open lines of communication with the district leadership team, departments, and campus staff.

22. Handle concerns with tact and diplomacy.

23. Communicate regularly with staff through meetings and written communication.

24. Demonstrate ability to communicate orally and in writing.

25. Promote and support organizational change.

26. Handle material of confidential nature.


SUPERVISION AND ORGANIZATION OF STAFF

27. Supervise and evaluate assigned staff, if applicable.

28. Keep supervisors advised of the productivity and efficiency of assigned staff.

29. Assist in preparing overall program budgets.

30. Assist in cost estimates for programs and services.

31. Initiate expenditures as directed by supervisor.

32. Recommend appropriate use of resources to achieve program goals.


ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Function within policies and administrative procedures of South San Antonio ISD
  • Accept other responsibilities as assigned.
  • Attend all meetings and staff development training, as required.
