Position Summary:
The Director of Total Rewards is a strategic HR leader responsible for designing, implementing, and managing the company’s compensation, benefits, and payroll programs. This role ensures that total rewards practices support organizational strategy, drive employee engagement and retention, maintain regulatory compliance, and enhance the company’s competitive position in the market.
The Director will partner closely with Finance, HRBPs, senior leadership, and external partners to deliver data-driven solutions that elevate the employee experience and drive business performance.
Key Responsibilities
1. Total Rewards Strategy & Leadership
Develop and execute a comprehensive total rewards strategy aligned with organizational goals, industry benchmarks, and employee value proposition.
Lead a team responsible for compensation, benefits, and payroll, using data-based decision, HR systems and industry best practices.
Serve as a strategic advisor to executive leadership on total rewards trends, workforce analytics, and market competitiveness.
Ensure integration and consistency across compensation, benefits, rewards, and payroll programs.
2. Compensation Management
Design, implement, and oversee all compensation programs, including base pay, variable pay, incentive plans, bonus and recognition programs.
Lead the annual compensation planning cycle, including short- and long-term strategies around merit, bonus, and market adjustments.
Conduct regular market analyses and benchmarking to ensure internal equity and external competitiveness.
Create and maintain job architecture, including job grading and job title based on validated job descriptions and classifications aligned to the global strategy.
Create the salary structure strategy, including salary matrix aligned to market.
Evaluate and recommend compensation policies, including pay transparency, wage compliance, and internal equity practices.
Partner with Finance on forecasting, modeling, and budgeting for compensation-related costs.
Educate and communicate with HR business partners to ensure clear roles, responsibilities, and accountability.
3. Benefits Oversight
Design the benefits strategy and oversee the implementation, and administration of all employee benefit programs, including medical, dental, vision, retirement, life insurance, disability, wellness, and leave programs.
Evaluate performance of benefit programs through ROI, cost analysis, market competitiveness, and employee feedback and make recommendations for continuous improvement
Oversee the annual open enrollment planning, communications, and execution.
Manage broker relationships, RFP processes, plan renewals, compliance filings (e.g., 5500), and audits.
Develop wellness initiatives designed to enhance employee wellbeing and reduce costs.
4. Payroll Leadership
Oversee accurate and timely payroll processing across multi-state (or single state) operations.
Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local wage laws, including overtime rules, pay frequency, meal/rest regulations, and garnishments.
Partner with Finance on payroll reconciliation, audits, tax reporting, and year-end processes (W-2s, 1095-Cs if applicable).
Implement controls and best practices to maintain accuracy, efficiency, and data integrity.
Evaluate payroll systems and recommend process improvements or system enhancements.
5. Compliance & Governance
Ensure compliance with all applicable regulations, including FLSA, IRS regulations, ACA, ERISA, COBRA, HIPAA, and state wage laws.
Develop and maintain compensation and benefits policies and procedures.
Lead internal and external audits related to payroll, benefits, and compensation.
Monitor and evaluate legislative and regulatory changes impacting total rewards programs.
6. HR Technology & Analytics
Leverage HRIS and payroll systems to optimize total rewards processes and analytics.
Provide dashboards, insights, and models to support data-driven decisionmaking.
Partner with IT/HRIS to enhance systems security, information access, functionality, reporting, and configuration.
Oversee vendor implementations and system improvements related to compensation, benefits, or payroll.
7. Employee Experience & Communications
Develop clear, engaging communication strategies for total rewards programs.
Support employees in understanding compensation decisions, benefits offerings, and payroll processes.
Enhance total rewards transparency and education to improve employee satisfaction and retention.
Partner with HRBPs to address escalated employee issues and ensure consistent application of policies.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in human resources, Business Administration, Finance, or related field.
10+ years of progressive experience in compensation, benefits, payroll, or total rewards.
5+ years of leadership or people management experience.
Demonstrated expertise in compensation structure design, job architecture, and market analysis.
Strong understanding of benefits regulations, payroll compliance, and HRIS/payroll systems (e.g., , UKG,).
Advanced Excel skills; proficiency in analytics and modeling.
Excellent communication, stakeholder management, and project leadership skills.
Preferred
Master’s degree or HR-related certifications (CCP, CBP).
Experience leading total rewards in a mid-sized or growth-oriented organization.
Experience with multi-state salaried and large hourly workforce populations.
Experience with process automation and continuous improvement methodologies.
