Job Description

The Dispatcher schedules loads and directs the activities of the delivery drivers to assure that all loads are delivered safely, on-time and accurately. This position requires frequent communication with the sales team, drivers, yard manager and customers.

The Dispatcher is responsible for the accuracy of the loads and must double check loads before they leave the yard. The Dispatcher is also responsible for the efficiency of deliveries and works to avoid extra trips, and wasted driver and vehicle time.

The Dispatcher reports to the Yard Manager and is an important part of the yard team. As a member of the Lumber Yard Team, the Dispatcher is also responsible for helping to build loads, unload vendor deliveries, putting stock away, loading delivery trucks, and scheduled maintenance of all yard equipment and delivery vehicles, maintaining a clean organized yard and providing great customer service. This position must be able to work as a team player with other co-workers and also support a team atmosphere for yard employees. Significant Lumber and building materials experience is important in this position.

Dispatcher responsibilities include:

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following, duties may change as management deems necessary:

Supervise drivers and assure proper operating procedures are in place to provide outstanding customer service and efficient and accurate delivery operations.

Train, motivate, supervise and schedule drivers to meet delivery needs.

Ensure compliance with company policies as well as state and federal labor laws.

Must maintain professional communication with sales, yard personnel, vendors and customers as well as other store employees. Must maintain a safe workplace environment and train others to do so as well

Monitor and assist in minimizing shrinkage and maximizing inventory profitability.

Verify inventory levels and report damages to Yard Manager.

Coordinate with salespeople as deliveries are made and pickups are needed.

Coordinate loads pulled and help prevent damages to inventory.

Assist in maintaining all yard equipment, trucks, banders, forklifts, saws and chainsaws to maximize the life of the equipment. Ensure proper training for employees, drivers and forklift operators, working with the equipment.

Requirements:

  • Must have lumber and building materials experience.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Basic computer knowledge a plus and point of sales systems.
  • Minimum of 2 years supervisory experience in the building materials industry.
  • Forklift certification, this must be maintained throughout employment
  • Maintain a weekly schedule and approve any additional overtime hours for delivery personnel.
  • Ensure accurate and safe handling of all vehicles loading and unloading both company delivery vehicles and customers’ vehicles.
  • Ensure all products are invoiced prior to leaving the yard.
  • Keep maintenance records for all equipment including forklifts, saws and delivery vehicles.
  • Perform minor repairs on all equipment and vehicles such as bulb replacement etc.
  • Help to ensure compliance to all safety and fire regulations for both yard personnel and customers.
  • Evaluate the performance of all drivers.
  • Help to keep yard clean and well organized.
  • Maintain security and watch for pilferage and theft of product from the yard.
  • Assume other duties as assigned by the Operations Manager.
