Supervise as many as 30 truck drivers daily, schedule jobs and trucks, and communicate to drivers where they need to be. Load trucks. Take asphalt and material orders by phone. Working hours can include days, nights, and weekends.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Supervise as many as 30 drivers a day. Communicate with drivers each morning about the day’s schedule, ensuring that they get the correct assignments and depart on time to arrive on schedule.
- Maintain a staffing calendar. Keep track of scheduled days off and know the number of trucks available to meet customer orders at least one week out. Monitor driver performance and attendance.
- Ensure that drivers comply with company policies and procedures; monitor new hire mentoring with experienced drivers; resolve discipline issues; handle drug testing assignments; conduct required tailgate safety meetings with drivers; promote a safety conscious culture.
- Monitor progress of drivers using the GPS fleet tracking system and be ready to assist drivers with directions. When required, provide drivers with clear, concise, legible written directions to the job, along with the customer’s contact information.
- Ensure drivers are aware of preventive maintenance appointments when notified by shop; help drivers notify shop when a repair (e.g. tire blowout) or service is needed on a truck, and when it will arrive at shop; arrange for a tow if necessary.
- Take daily asphalt orders by phone and coordinate them with the asphalt plant operators to ensure enough material is made to meet daily demand; help compile a working list of next day and next week asphalt orders by customer, mix type, amount and date.
- Direct non-asphalt-order-related phone calls where appropriate.
- Safely load trucks using plant loadout program; ensure that load tickets are collected, organized, and distributed appropriately; process payments for credit card customers as needed.
- Other duties as assigned.
Education & Experience
High School education required. Some college work preferred. Minimum of (2) two to (5) five years of dispatch experience in a fast-paced, demanding environment.
