Domestic Violence Program Assistant

The Police Department is currently recruiting for a full-time Domestic Violence Program Assistant. This limited duration position is grant funded through December 31, 2026. The person in this position performs a variety of specialty police support duties including crisis intervention and victim advocacy services The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in providing service to victims of domestic violence and sexual violence crimes. Requirements include completion of the Oregon State Victim’s Assistance Academy (or equivalent) and some experience providing administrative support within an office environment.

The principal function of an employee in this class performs a variety of specialty police support duties including crisis intervention and victim advocacy services. The work is performed under the supervision and direction of an assigned supervisor, but considerable leeway is granted for the exercise of independent judgment and initiative. The nature of the work performed requires that an employee in this class establish and maintain effective working relationships with department and City personnel and the general public. The principal duties of this class are performed in a police department environment.

VAWA grant support – Providing DV/SA victim advocacy and maintaining the records in support of the
grant.

Examples of Essential Work

  • Serves as a “Jessica Gonzales Victim Assistant” to police identified domestic violence and sexual violence victims.
  • Responds to victims with crisis counseling services and safety planning to victims of domestic violence and sexual violence.
  • Provides information to identified victims and referrals to community resources.
  • Provides education on dynamics of domestic and sexual violence and healthy relationships compared to relationships based on power and control.
  • Performs follow-up victim contacts; determines follow-up needs of children.
  • Provides referrals and information on enforcement of civil protection orders.
  • Provides follow-up information and referral.
  • Interacts with the court systems, advocacy programs and appropriate resources for victims in the Washington County Area.
  • Reviews and scores fatality risk assessment data and communicates resulting information to co-workers.
  • Manage records and information in any format, in accordance with applicable statutes, regulations and City policy, guidance and records retention schedule.
  • Performs other duties of a similar nature and level as assigned.

Acceptable Experience and Training

High School Diploma or GED, office experience, completion of the Oregon State Victim’s Assistance Academy (or comparable 40-hour victim assistance curriculum), experience working with law enforcement agencies, and a strong interest in providing service to victims of domestic violence and sexual violence crimes; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.

Licensing/Certifications

  • Valid Driver's License and safe driving record;
  • Must be able to pass an extensive background investigation;
  • Ability to attend work on a regular, predictable basis as scheduled.

Additional Information

Hillsboro Police Department offers Bi-Lingual Pay: Employees who are qualified by the department as bi-lingual in English and Spanish or Japanese, American Sign Language or a language spoken by over ten percent (10%) of City residents as documented by the most recent U.S. Census will receive a monthly premium of five percent (5%) of their regular base pay.
