Emergency Medical Dispatcher

Position: Customer Experience Specialist / Dispatcher

The Emergency Medical Dispatcher is responsible for receiving and prioritizing emergency and non-emergency calls, dispatching appropriate resources, and providing pre-arrival instructions. This role requires strong judgment, calmness under pressure, and the ability to coordinate field units efficiently while maintaining accurate records.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Answer and prioritize emergency and non-emergency calls.
  • Dispatch crews and monitor their routes and status.
  • Provide pre-arrival instructions and crisis intervention.
  • Communicate critical details to ambulance crews.
  • Operate multi-line phone and radio systems.
  • Enter call data into the CAD system and maintain records.
  • Verify and input insurance information accurately.
  • Work flexible shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

Required Qualifications

High school diploma, GED, or equivalent qualification
Minimum 6 months of experience handling high call volumes (dispatch, public safety, healthcare, or call center)
Ability to type at least 45 WPM with accuracy
Ability to obtain and maintain EMD certification within 1–3 months of hire

Preferred Qualifications

Basic medical terminology knowledge
Experience in EMS, fire, police, or other public safety setting
Prior use of Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) or radio communications systems

Skills

Strong ability to remain calm and make decisions under pressure
Excellent verbal communication and customer‑service skills
Ability to multitask in a fast‑paced environment
Basic computer proficiency; experience with CAD or dispatch software is a plus

Working Environment

Due to the nature of EMS Care working conditions, employees may be exposed to inclement weather, potentially hazardous conditions, psychological stressors, diseases, and other illnesses. Frequent interruptions, work pressure, difficult personalities, and irregularities in work schedule are expected. Employees are subject to continually changing deadlines while performing the duties of this job. The employee will be occasionally required to attend meetings, some of which may take place outside of regular working hours.
