Job Description Summary
The purpose of the Engineering Lead is to work with the Lab Product Owner to provide effectively leadership and management of the teams in their Labs. Specifically, this requires setting the vision, mobilisation of the teams required to deliver it and ensuring effective delivery execution. With the Lab PO they are also responsible for all operational management activities including workforce plans, risk and issue mitigation and cost management. There is a particular focus on the ways of working and overall engineering experience, where the Engineering Lead is responsible for creating the right environment for effective delivery which will include the identification of blockers and action plans to remove them.

  • Summary:
    You’ll act as a modern leader who works collaboratively with other Lab roles to create empowered Teams that are motivated to take on business problems and realise value to customers through excellence in execution.
    Primarily you’ll be accountable for the technical direction of the Lab, which includes lab application architecture and design, development best practice, software vendor management, route to live and system risks. You will also be responsible for the support (we call them “Run”) function of software systems that the Lab owns, in terms of incident, problem management and resolution, including 24x7 support. .
    You’ll need to have a solid background within software engineering, line management and great people skills to carry out this role and have a fantastic opportunity to really make a difference both within Lloyds and for our customers. You’ll have responsibility for approximately 100 staff, with 8-10 direct reports.

    Who are the Markets Platform?
    Markets Platform, part of CIO Commercial division is focussed on product management and development of all aspects of the customer journey in Traded products for the Ring Fenced and Non-Ringfenced Bank. Our teams also focus on maintaining service and the key aspects of risk and data reflecting the Value Stream vision of Powering access to Global Markets through the energy and focus of brilliant teams.

    What will I be responsible for in this role?
    This is a big role, with a lot of responsibilities! So we have expanded this section more than we normally would in and advert and hope it gives you more insight into the role.
    You’ll aim to be a transformational leader who works collaboratively with other Lab roles to create empowered Teams that are motivated to take on business problems and realise value to customers through excellence in execution.
    The software you support will be focused around our Markets Business applications and all associated software, both internal and 3rd party. This has a significant data component and also involves many big date / data warehouse systems.
    The role will work alongside the Lab Product Owner in shaping the vision for the Lab, and as a result centre on setting the strategic direction for the engineering teams to demonstrate thought leadership on contemporary technical delivery, across the entire lifecycle, from idea to realisation of value.
    You’ll be accountable for the support (we call them “Run”) function of software systems that the Lab owns, in terms of incident, problem management and resolution, including 24x7 support. This also includes lab application architecture and design, development best practice, software vendor management, route to live and system risks.
    A core goal of the Lab Engineering Lead is to work with Lab Engineers to understand where systems need improvement and work with the Lab PO to prioritise system improvements alongside the delivery of product features. This will often mean communicating the importance of system improvements in business terms so that benefits are clearly realised.
    You’ll take responsibility for improving the Lab technical position whilst working and coaching a wide variety of technical Engineering disciplines, including Software Engineers.
    Additionally, you will also aim to increases Engineering efficiency, quality and release velocity whilst recruiting, retaining and developing engineering talent within the Lab.
    Fostering the right culture is key and you’ll aim to promote a “Fail Fast, Learn Faster” mentality within Teams to experiment and test new ways of engineering, to act as a change agent for engineering and team culture, fostering a test and learn approach, systems thinking and user experience led design. Promoting a culture of learning and continuous improvement influenced with an eye to best practice emerging in the wider market is also important.
    Ideally, you’ll also fosters connections with Engineering expertise external to the Bank whilst understanding the business benefits of leveraging Open Source technology. The ideal candidate will inspire delivery and will develop confidence & trust with the Engineering community by continually growing their own core technology capability.

    What will we be looking for in those who apply?
    As this is a key senior position within the company, in a very important revenue generating area with the ability to influence the work and lives of many staff we do need to see a significant number of demonstrated skills, past experience and knowledge.
    In order to be seriously considered for this role, we will need to see evidence in your CV to support the following:
    • A prior background within Software Engineering backed up by senior leadership experience within an Engineering community.
    • Strong knowledge of the software development lifecycle and experience in end to end delivery of software products, with current skills in at least one core language relevant to the Lab (Examples might be C#, Java or Python)
    • Strong line and people management skills. You’ll be responsible for roughly 100 staff in this role.
    • Technical knowledge: A solid understanding of common Engineering practices, common technologies within the Markets/Trading sector, Cloud Technologies and Distributed Data / Big Data systems.
    • Deep knowledge of modern Application Architecture design with evidence of delivery of scalable, resilient, robust systems to a relevant Business area.
    • Knowledge of the field of Distributed Computation and Analytics, and an appreciation of Quantitative and Machine Learning techniques and where they bring benefit to the Lab and Business.

    • A background within Markets, Trading or Investment Banking is highly advantageous for this role because it is so niche. You’ll need to demonstrate how you might overcome this if you have all the other backgrounds we need but not worked within Markets, which we are open to.
    • Modern Engineering practice knowledge, including Agile working, DevOps, CI/DI, TDD etc.

    This is a technical role, but at this level your people skills are often more important.”
