Job Description Summary
The purpose of the Engineering Lead is to work with the Lab Product Owner to provide effectively leadership and management of the teams in their Labs. Specifically, this requires setting the vision, mobilisation of the teams required to deliver it and ensuring effective delivery execution. With the Lab PO they are also responsible for all operational management activities including workforce plans, risk and issue mitigation and cost management. There is a particular focus on the ways of working and overall engineering experience, where the Engineering Lead is responsible for creating the right environment for effective delivery which will include the identification of blockers and action plans to remove them.
Job Description
  • The Lab Engineering Lead is a transformational leader who works collaboratively with other Lab roles to create empowered Teams who are motivated to take on business problems and realise value to customers through excellence in execution. The role will work alongside the Lab Product Owner in shaping the vision for the Lab, and as a result centre on setting the strategic direction for the engineering teams to demonstrate thought leadership on complex, multi-platform, technical delivery, across the entire lifecycle, from idea to realisation of value.
    The Engineering Lab Lead is accountable for system risks, software vendor management, route to live and system design as well as working with the Run function to resolve post-live issues created by change. A core goal of the Lab Engineering Lead is to work with Lab Chapters to understand where systems need improvement and work with the Lab Product Owner to prioritise system improvements alongside the delivery of product features. This will often mean communicating the importance of system improvements in business terms so that benefits are clearly realised.
    The Lab Engineering Lead is responsible for improving the Lab technical position whilst working and coaching a wide variety of technical Engineering disciplines, including Software Engineers, Technical Application Specialists, DevOps and Quality Engineers. The Lab Engineering Lead fosters a “Fail Fast, Learn Faster” mentality within Teams to experiment and test new ways of engineering, to act as a change agent for engineering and team culture, fostering a test and learn approach, systems thinking and user experience led design. They share knowledge across Chapters and across broader Platforms via Engineering Communities and Guilds.
    This role offers an opportunity to be part of Alex Moore’s leadership team, driving direct engineering and delivering best practice in terms of technology, process, method & people.
    Key Accountabilities
    o To be part of shaping and steering the Commercial Colleague Channels Lab through its transformation journey using knowledge of best practise, past experience, and an understanding of industry direction and hands on experience of complex engineering.
    o Run a lab of engineering resources that include: in-house developed cloud native applications as well as industry leading third party solutions. The role will also be responsible for some older technology but intention is to decommission these and move to target state cloud based solutions.
    o Drive a culture of learning and continuous improvement influenced by engineering best practice
    o Complex Engineering Strategy planning background and focus
    o Attend and support local technical meetups whilst understanding the business benefits of leveraging and contributing to Open Source projects.
    o Relentless focus on delivering business value through sound and fully rounded engineering methods and principles .
    o Understands and ensures industry best practices are understood by Lab Engineering Community and related business functions.
    o Fosters knowledge sharing through Lab Chapters to provide solutions for complex business problems where no precedent exists and facilitates implementation of solutions within Chapters where appropriate.
    o Accountable for ensuring that all Engineering work in the Lab is carried out in line with Bank standards.
    o Champions the principles & aims of Transformation in order to guide and support teams through Transformational change, creating the right environment and culture within the Lab for teams to be successful.
    o Works with the Lab Product Owner & Team Product Owners, Architects and Chapter Leads to set the strategic direction, understand solution choices, whether operational or technological, and help define an incremental delivery plan.
    o Leads, influences and agrees the strategy for the Lab and key design decisions across technology, operating model, customer experience and other design viewpoints.
    o Works with the Chapter Leads to mentor and develop the technical team within the Lab providing clear and constructive feedback .
    o Takes responsibility for technical delivery across the Lab, ensuring that the technical tasks required to deliver the agreed business outcomes are progressing to plan and that any deviations or blockers are dealt with in a timely manner.
    • Works with Agile Coaches to create opportunities for learning and growth for all Chapters
    o Encourages and ensures that engineers join Communities of Practice, Guilds and Working Groups to deliver peer-to-peer mentoring and joint engineering initiatives via coordinated sessions and InnerSource delivery methods.
    o Fosters knowledge sharing to provide solutions for complex business problems where no precedent may exist, and ensures implementation of solutions.
    Key capabilities, knowledge, skills and experience:
    o The ideal candidate will inspire delivery whilst encouraging simplicity and developing confidence & trust.
    o Recent technical implementation experience across a combination of inhouse cloud native solutions as well as industry leading third party solutions. Some experience of leading work and teams on Pega and Microsoft Dynamics would be preferred but not essential as long as candidate has experience managing similar third party solutions.
    o Practical understanding of core competencies at a Leadership level: Agile, DevOps, Customer-First Development, Modern Architecture.
    o Extensive track record of building strong senior level relationships and providing constructive support and challenge to directors.
    o Start-up mentality and experience of quick releases with iterative and continuous delivery.
    o Experience of Commercial Banking business would be great but not a must.
    o A respected leader who can make good technical decisions about modern technology and architecture. Devops Organisation experience is essential.
    o Track record of working in Agile/non-waterfall environments and fully understands and approaches Agile practically.
    o Track record of successfully recruiting great people with the ability to recruit the best people.
    o Strong Leadership Skills: experience of managing teams, able to influence, persuade and lead with a challenge mind-set.
    o Demonstrate and apply exemplary software engineering practices and skills as well as mentor and nurture the talent at all levels of their software engineering community.
    o Clear written communication skills for the chat-focused labs we’re building.
    o Thorough, practical understanding of customer-first design with practical experience in doing things for customers properly.
    o Community Involvement: connected to the outside Engineering world and understand it – networks would be a big benefit for recruiting.
    o Continuous Improvement mind-set: keeps up to date with tech, displaying awareness of outside companies, methodology and advancements.
    o Able to work effectively with multi-disciplinary, internal and external geographically distributed teams across the project lifecycle.
    o Is an advocate for Engineering, provides a voice to engineers within the teams, identifying and supporting their teams in resolution of impediments and issues.
    o Continuous curiosity to learn and develop themselves with industry best practice methods and tooling, along with the tools used by their engineering teams, in order to add value in validating team engineering work and decisions, and if necessary able to work alongside engineers hands on.
    o Ability to motivate to challenge the status quo and an appreciation and understanding of first principles thinking.
    o Are environment aware, can identify technical impediments / bottlenecks and work directly to resolve.
    o Are technology agnostic and are willing to adapt their approach in pursuit of the best solution.
    o Understand agile and the relationship between agile definitions and automated delivery.
    o Automate everything. If there's a tool to automate manual tasks, engineers will automate. Experience of Playwright would be great but not a must.
    o Are industry aware and understand the importance of new technical approaches to evolve solutions and the experience of the team
