The Lab Engineering Lead is a transformational leader who works collaboratively with other Lab roles to create empowered Teams who are motivated to take on business problems and realise value to customers through excellence in execution. The role will work alongside the Lab Product Owner in shaping the vision for the Lab, and as a result centre on setting the strategic direction for the engineering teams to demonstrate thought leadership on complex, multi-platform, technical delivery, across the entire lifecycle, from idea to realisation of value.
The Engineering Lab Lead is accountable for system risks, software vendor management, route to live and system design as well as working with the Run function to resolve post-live issues created by change. A core goal of the Lab Engineering Lead is to work with Lab Chapters to understand where systems need improvement and work with the Lab Product Owner to prioritise system improvements alongside the delivery of product features. This will often mean communicating the importance of system improvements in business terms so that benefits are clearly realised.
The Lab Engineering Lead is responsible for improving the Lab technical position whilst working and coaching a wide variety of technical Engineering disciplines, including Software Engineers, Technical Application Specialists, DevOps and Quality Engineers. The Lab Engineering Lead fosters a “Fail Fast, Learn Faster” mentality within Teams to experiment and test new ways of engineering, to act as a change agent for engineering and team culture, fostering a test and learn approach, systems thinking and user experience led design. They share knowledge across Chapters and across broader Platforms via Engineering Communities and Guilds.

o To be part of shaping and steering the Commercial Colleague Channels Lab through its transformation journey using knowledge of best practise, past experience, and an understanding of industry direction and hands on experience of complex engineering.
o Run a lab of engineering resources that include: in-house developed cloud native applications as well as industry leading third party solutions. The role will also be responsible for some older technology but intention is to decommission these and move to target state cloud based solutions.

o Attend and support local technical meetups whilst understanding the business benefits of leveraging and contributing to Open Source projects.

o Fosters knowledge sharing through Lab Chapters to provide solutions for complex business problems where no precedent exists and facilitates implementation of solutions within Chapters where appropriate.
o Accountable for ensuring that all Engineering work in the Lab is carried out in line with Bank standards.
o Champions the principles & aims of Transformation in order to guide and support teams through Transformational change, creating the right environment and culture within the Lab for teams to be successful.
o Works with the Lab Product Owner & Team Product Owners, Architects and Chapter Leads to set the strategic direction, understand solution choices, whether operational or technological, and help define an incremental delivery plan.
o Leads, influences and agrees the strategy for the Lab and key design decisions across technology, operating model, customer experience and other design viewpoints.
o Works with the Chapter Leads to mentor and develop the technical team within the Lab providing clear and constructive feedback .
o Takes responsibility for technical delivery across the Lab, ensuring that the technical tasks required to deliver the agreed business outcomes are progressing to plan and that any deviations or blockers are dealt with in a timely manner.
o Practical understanding of core competencies at a Leadership level: Agile, DevOps, Customer-First Development, Modern Architecture.
o Continuous curiosity to learn and develop themselves with industry best practice methods and tooling, along with the tools used by their engineering teams, in order to add value in validating team engineering work and decisions, and if necessary able to work alongside engineers hands on.
