Job Summary
The Environmental Officer is responsible for ensuring the organization complies with all local, state, and federal environmental regulations. This role involves monitoring environmental performance, conducting site inspections, managing waste disposal, controlling pollution, and promoting sustainable practices. The officer will identify environmental risks and implement mitigation strategies to minimize the company’s ecological footprint.
Key ResponsibilitiesCompliance & Regulation
- Ensure company operations comply with environmental laws (e.g., EPA standards, Clean Air/Water Acts, local bylaws).
- Obtain, renew, and maintain environmental permits and licenses.
- Prepare and submit mandatory environmental reports to regulatory bodies.
- Keep abreast of changes in environmental legislation and advise management on required actions.
Monitoring & Inspection
- Conduct regular site inspections (air, water, noise, soil, waste storage).
- Monitor emissions, effluents, and waste disposal methods.
- Collect environmental samples (e.g., water, soil, stack emissions) for laboratory analysis.
- Operate and maintain environmental monitoring equipment (e.g., dust monitors, pH meters, gas detectors).
Waste & Pollution Management
- Oversee hazardous and non-hazardous waste management (segregation, storage, transportation, disposal).
- Implement spill prevention and response plans.
- Manage stormwater, wastewater treatment, and air emission control systems.
- Investigate environmental incidents (spills, illegal discharges, contamination) and prepare corrective action reports.
Training & Culture
- Deliver environmental awareness training to staff and contractors.
- Promote recycling, energy efficiency, water conservation, and biodiversity initiatives.
- Communicate environmental policies and emergency procedures.
Documentation & Audits
- Maintain environmental records (waste manifests, inspection logs, monitoring data).
- Coordinate internal and external environmental audits.
- Assist in developing Environmental Management Systems (EMS) such as ISO 14001.
- Prepare emergency response plans for environmental hazards.
Qualifications & RequirementsEducation
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Chemistry, Biology, or a related field.
Experience
- 2–5 years of relevant experience in environmental compliance, monitoring, or management (entry-level may be considered for junior roles).
- Experience in [specific industry: manufacturing, construction, mining, oil & gas, or utilities] is preferred.
Certifications (Desirable)
- NEBOSH Environmental Certificate / IEMA Foundation Certificate.
- ISO 14001 Internal Auditor.
- Certified Environmental Professional (CEP) or equivalent local certification.
- Hazardous Waste Management (RCRA) or Spill Response training.
Technical Skills
- Knowledge of environmental regulations (e.g., EPA, EU EHS, local DEP standards).
- Familiarity with environmental monitoring equipment and sampling protocols.
- Proficiency in MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and environmental data management software.
- Understanding of waste classification, air quality modeling, or wastewater treatment basics.
Soft Skills
- Strong attention to detail and analytical thinking.
- Excellent written and verbal communication.
- Problem-solving under pressure.
- Ability to work outdoors and in industrial environments (walking, climbing, wearing PPE).
- Team collaboration and ability to enforce rules diplomatically.
