Position title: ESL Instructor

Department: Family Resource Center and Health Education Unit

Reports to: Program Director

FLSA Status: Full time, exempt

General Summary:

Conducts instruction to adults in ESL, Civics and job readiness at a community based setting. Helps students reach learning goals. Within that role, performs duties that include curriculum planning and instruction and delivers approved curriculum to students.

Essential Job Function:

1. Adapt teaching methods and instructional materials to meet students' varying needs, abilities, and interests.
2. Maintain accurate and complete student records as required by laws and/or administrative policies.
3. Assign and grade class work and homework.
4. Prepare and administer written, oral, and performance tests, and issue grades in accordance with performance.
5. Conduct classes, workshops, and demonstrations to teach principles, techniques, or methods in subjects such as basic

English language skills, civics, life skills and workforce entry skills.

6. Observe and evaluate students' work to determine progress and make suggestions for improvement.
7. Establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects and communicate those objectives to students.
8. Instruct students individually and in groups, using various teaching methods such as lectures, discussions, and demonstrations.

9. Guide and counsel students with adjustment or academic problems, or special academic interests.
10. Prepare materials for assigned classes and complete lesson plans. Show written evidence of preparation to immediate supervisor.

11. Observe students to determine qualifications, limitations, abilities, interests, and other individual characteristics.
12. Prepare objectives and outlines for courses of study, following curriculum guidelines or requirements of funder/state.
13. Register, orient, and assess new students according to standards and procedures.
14. Review instructional content, methods, and student evaluations to assess strengths and weaknesses, and to develop recommendations for course revision, development, or elimination.

15. Establish and enforce rules for behavior and procedures for maintaining order among the assigned students.
16. Prepare students for further education by encouraging them to explore learning opportunities and to persevere with challenging tasks.

17. Prepare students for naturalization process, specifically preparing them for citizenship test.
18. Assure that each goal of the grant is adhered to and attained including: percentage of students increasing a level after 50 hours of instruction; percentage of students attaining citizenship; percentage retained in class; etc.

19. Offer one on one assistance to students to promote grant goals as per #18.
20. Enforce administration policies and rules governing students.
21. Use computers, audio-visual aids, SmartBoard and other equipment and materials to supplement presentations.
22. Use the HFC electronic client record (CX360) to enter all student information.
23. Use the LACES and/or other funder required system to enter all data as per grant requirement.
24. Instruct and monitor students in the use and care of equipment and materials to prevent injuries and damage.
25. Prepare and implement remedial programs for students requiring extra help.
26. Plan and conduct activities for a balanced program of instruction, demonstration, and work time that provides students with opportunities to observe, question, and investigate.

27. Select, order, and issue books, materials, and supplies for courses or projects.
28. Prepare reports on students and activities as required by funders, supervisor and administration.

29. Confer with other staff members to plan and schedule lessons that promote learning, following approved curricula
30. Attend professional meetings, conferences, and workshops to maintain and improve professional competence.
31. Collaborate with other teachers and professionals in the development of instructional programs.
32. Plan and supervise class projects, field trips, job fairs, visits by guest speakers, contests, or other experiential activities, and guide students in learning from those activities.

33. Attend staff meetings and serve on committees, as required.
34. Provide disabled students with assistive devices, supportive technology, and assistance accessing facilities such as restrooms.

35. Pre and post test students to assess retention of learning.
36. Conduct outreach to fill all slots in program.
37. Ensures immediate and thorough communication to supervisor of program problems and provides recommended resolution to identified problem.

38. Performs other tasks and duties as assigned.

4. Learning Strategies — Must be able to select and use training/instructional methods and procedures appropriate for the situation when learning or teaching new things.

7. Must be able to set and maintain clear and appropriate professional boundaries with students.
8. Must be able to communicate extremely well in Spanish and English (written and oral).
9. Must have the knowledge of resources within the community necessary for the consumers.
10. Must be able to promptly complete required reports using a computer.
11. Must be able to work evenings and weekends.

Education and Experience:

Bachelors Degree in Education, Human Services, Social Work or a related field

2 years of experience in adult education, social work, human services or related field

Proficient in Microsoft Office and other computer based reporting systems

Excellent oral and written communication skills required in English

Bilingual/Bicultural (English/Spanish) strongly preferred

Requires car, valid registration, insurance and driver’s license, clean driving record

Physical Requirements: This position requires the ability to travel in the community, walk for several blocks in the community, sit for an extended period of time in the office and remain alert and attentive. It requires hand and physical dexterity for the use of office equipment. It requires the ability to climb steps and walk short distances. Requires an ability to be outside for hours at a time for outreach. It also requires the ability to perform all office duties such as using a computer, telephone and communicating with staff and consumers.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $45,000.00 - $50,000.00 per year
