Experienced Host for Busy Waterside Restaurant

Coriander Kitchen & Farm — Detroit (Jefferson-Chalmers, canal-side)
$15+/hour + tips (based on experience)

Coriander Kitchen & Farm is a woman-owned restaurant and bar on Detroit’s east side, tucked into a former marina along the canals.

We’re a high-volume, seasonal restaurant with a very specific energy — warm, a little chaotic, deeply human. We often call it “drunk grandma”: welcoming, a little loose, but always caring.

We’re looking for an experienced host who knows how to run a door, not just stand at one.

What this role actually is:

You are the first and last impression of Coriander.

You’re not just greeting guests — you’re:

  • Setting expectations before problems happen
  • Managing the flow between indoor dining, the greenhouse, and canal-side tables
  • Navigating walk-ins, reservations, weather shifts, and wait times — often all at once
  • Keeping your composure and warmth, even when things get busy or complicated

This is a role for someone who can stay grounded, think ahead, and communicate clearly under pressure.

What we’re looking for:

  • Experience hosting in a busy restaurant (required)
  • Strong presence — warm, confident, and direct
  • Ability to manage a waitlist and seating chart without getting overwhelmed
  • Clear communicator — with guests and the team
  • Comfortable making quick decisions and adjusting on the fly
  • Willing to work indoors and outdoors in all weather
  • A natural sense of hospitality — you care how people feel when they walk in

This is not a good fit for someone who is shy, passive, or easily flustered.

Nice to have:

  • Experience with Tock or another reservation system
  • Experience managing both reservations and walk-in volume

Schedule:

Dinner and weekend availability required
Seasonal volume increases significantly in spring/summer

What we offer:

  • $15+/hour + tips (higher starting rate for strong candidates)
  • Staff meals during shifts
  • Dining + merch discounts
  • A supportive, experienced team
  • A workplace where hospitality actually matters
