We are seeking a unique Façade Structural Engineer who has cut their teeth within a façade contracting or manufacturing company. Your experience is not just in analysis, but in creating practical, buildable, and cost-effective structural solutions that get fabricated and installed. You will be our internal expert, using your hands-on knowledge to vet designs, review subcontractor submissions, and ensure our projects are structurally sound and feasible from day one.
Key Responsibilities
1. Practical Design & Contractor Review:
- Leverage your contracting background to review and challenge architectural and consultant designs for buildability, cost, and structural efficiency.
- Perform independent checks and review all structural calculations from façade contractors (for glass, aluminum, steel supports, brackets, etc.) with a critical eye for practical fabrication and safety.
- Analyze complex structural details using STAAD.Pro and other FEA software (ANSYS, ABAQUS), focusing on real-world connections and load paths.
- Specialize in glass analysis and the structural behavior of unitized and stick systems under wind, seismic, and dead loads.
2. Contractor Coordination & Problem-Solving:
- Be the primary technical point of contact for façade contractors during tender and construction, addressing RFIs with practical solutions.
- Ensure contractor proposals and shop drawings are structurally adequate and comply with project specifications.
- Bring a "workshop mindset" to value engineering, proposing alternatives that maintain safety and performance while optimizing for fabrication.
3. Internal Coordination:
- Work closely with the Façade Manager and CAD Technician to develop robust, approval-ready tender packages.
- Coordinate with the main Civil/Structural Engineer to resolve interface issues between the façade and the primary building structure.
- Liaise with MEP teams to structurally assess integration points for equipment and penetrations.
Required Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.
- 5-8 years of direct experience in the structural engineering department of a façade contractor or specialist manufacturer.
- Essential Software Proficiency: STAAD.Pro and experience with finite element analysis (FEA) software.
- Proven hands-on experience in the structural design of curtain walls, cladding, and glass structures.
- Deep understanding of materials (aluminum, glass, steel) and their behavior in a façade context.
- Experience in preparing and reviewing structural calculations, wind load analysis, method statements, and shop drawings for fabrication.
Ideal Candidate Profile
- You have a contractor's practical mindset—you think about how a design will be welded, assembled, and installed, not just calculated.
- You are adept at finding simple, cost-effective structural solutions to complex design challenges.
- You are a strong communicator, able to clearly explain structural requirements and critique contractor submissions with authority.
Why Join This Team?
- Move from a subcontractor role to a client-side position with broader strategic influence.
- Use your hands-on contracting experience to prevent problems before they occur on site.
- Be a key member of a specialist team with a direct impact on project quality and success.
