Core Responsibilities

The day-to-day tasks focus on the safety, compliance, and reliability of critical mechanical infrastructure.

  • HTM Compliance and Management: The primary responsibility is to ensure all mechanical systems comply with relevant HTM guidelines. This can involve serving as a Competent or Authorised Person for specific systems (e.g., medical gas pipeline systems, ventilation, decontamination) .
  • Maintenance and Validation: You will be responsible for the Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM), testing, and validation of critical equipment. This includes systems covered by HTM 01 (decontamination) for sterilizers and washers, HTM 02 (medical gases), and HTM 03 (heating and ventilation systems) such as boilers, AHUs, and fume cupboards .
  • Technical Leadership and Assurance: You will play a key technical role in developing policies and procedures to maintain compliance. This involves monitoring compliance performance, identifying risks, and maintaining up-to-date records and documentation for inspection readiness .
  • Project Management and Design: In more senior or design-focused roles, you may lead mechanical design for healthcare facility projects. This includes designing HVAC, plumbing, and medical gas systems for new builds or renovations, ensuring strict adherence to healthcare standards like HTM, HBN (Health Building Notes), and other relevant codes .
  • Fault Finding and Emergency Response: A key part of the role is diagnosing and resolving faults on complex mechanical systems, often within a 24/7 hospital environment. You may be required to participate in an on-call rota to respond to emergencies like infrastructure shutdowns .

✅ Qualifications and Experience

Employers look for a combination of formal engineering credentials and specialized HTM knowledge.

  • Educational Background: A foundational requirement is a qualification in mechanical engineering. This is often a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, a Higher National Diploma (HND), or a recognized apprenticeship with advanced certifications (e.g., NVQ Level 3/City & Guilds) .
  • HTM Certification and Expertise: This is the defining requirement. The specific certification needed depends on the role's focus. For instance, a role in decontamination would require being a "Certified Decontamination Test Person in HTM 01 Service" . Other roles may require certifications or proven expertise in HTM 02 (medical gases), HTM 03 (ventilation), or HTM 06 (electrical safety) .
  • Relevant Experience: Employers typically seek candidates with proven experience in a healthcare or large-scale estates environment. Experience levels can range from a few years for technician-level roles to over 10 years for senior management and project lead positions .
  • Additional Skills:
  • Familiarity with Computer-Aided Facility Management (CAFM) or Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) .
  • Strong knowledge of health and safety legislation and risk management .
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills, especially for roles involving team supervision
