Position Summary & Responsibilities

Position Summary:

This position performs skilled and multi-trade work in the maintenance, repair, and operation of Kansas State Fair facilities, with an emphasis on HVAC and plumbing systems. The incumbent assists with maintenance projects, supervises assigned staff, ensures compliance with applicable codes, and supports event readiness for Fair and non-Fair activities.

Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:

Skilled Trades Work (HVAC, Plumbing, Electrical & General Maintenance)

  • Perform and complete work orders and special assignments across multiple trades, including HVAC, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, refrigeration, and grounds maintenance.
  • Demonstrate working knowledge of plumbing, heating, ventilation, air-conditioning, and electrical systems, including the ability to evaluate, diagnose, and repair issues.
  • Winterize buildings and systems as required.
  • Assist in performing concrete work including pouring and finishing floors, curbs, driveways, and related structures.
  • Install and repair wiring, power appliances, and electrical devices; operates a wide variety of tools and equipment.
  • Assist with the fabrication, construction, installation, and repair of metal components, tools, and machinery; performs shop and field adjustments.
  • Supervise and direct work crews, including planning, assigning, and reviewing work.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable codes and standards, including ADA, Fire Safety, and Life Safety requirements.


Qualifications

Licensing & Certification:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and general building maintenance systems and practices.
  • Ability to diagnose and repair mechanical and building system issues.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, work orders, and technical specifications.
  • Ability to supervise and direct the work of others.
  • Skill in operating tools, equipment, and machinery safely.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and recordkeeping skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in facility maintenance within a large venue, Fairgrounds, or event-based environment.
  • Knowledge of ADA, fire safety, and life safety codes and compliance standards.
  • Experience with capital improvement planning and project cost estimation.
  • Trade certifications in HVAC, plumbing, or electrical systems.
