Muskegon Community College is a center for lifelong learning that helps people attain their educational goals by offering programs that respond to individual, community, and global needs. MCC is an associate degree-granting institution of higher education and an applied technology leader for high-tech, hands-on training.
With nearly a 100-year history of academic excellence, MCC is a public community college accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. With robust student success support, free tutoring, 20 athletic teams, events, clubs, and activities, MCC has an annual, full-time equated student enrollment of approximately 2,300 and an unduplicated headcount of 5,100.
Most recently, Muskegon Community College outranked all other colleges in Michigan for the rate of students who received federal financial aid and then transferred to continue their education at a four-year institution. The college’s transfer-out rate was the highest in Michigan, 7 percentage points above the state average, and outpaced the average transfer rate across the nation.
The College has an annual operating budget (general fund) of $51 million and employs about 210 regular full and part-time staff and many adjunct faculty and student assistants. The College also offers 52 Associate degree programs and 24 certificate programs.
The main campus is located on a 111-acre campus in Muskegon which includes the Hendrik Meijer Library & Information Technology Center, Bartels-Rode Gymnasium, Frauenthal Foundation Fine Arts Center (including the Overbrook Theater and Art Gallery), Stevenson Center, the Science Center, the Health and Wellness Center, Art & Music Building, and MCC Golf Course.
Muskegon Community College also operates the Sturrus Technology Center and Fab Lab in downtown Muskegon and extension centers in Ottawa and Newaygo Counties.

General Description:
Responsible for instruction and facilitating student learning; a highly qualified conductor as well as an inspiring leader who can serve musicians at various levels of musical experience. In addition to leading concert and jazz ensembles as an artistic director, will oversee music programming including concerts, and student/community performances at college and community events. Teaching responsibilities will include courses in humanities, music education, private lessons, and collaborations with other faculty/staff. Must demonstrate a commitment to student recruitment, retention, and success; assessment of student learning; curriculum development; and the effective use of both traditional and innovative instructional methods. The candidate should also contribute meaningfully to the college’s ongoing commitment to student success.
Required Skills
Qualifications: Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Master’s degree in music or 18 master level credits in music and a master’s degree in humanities with two years relevant music teaching experience, preferably in higher education.
- Demonstrated ability to teach a variety of music courses such as Music Theory, Sight-Reading and Ear Training.
- 3 years minimum of professional experience in the music field as a practicing musician with a performance record, music production or studio work, ensemble direction, or musicology research preferred.
- Orchestra conducting experience with piano proficiency preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to work with varying populations representing a wide range of abilities, ages, nationalities, and cultures.
- Exhibits excellence in communication and presentation skills, both oral and written, with the ability to connect with diverse audiences.
- A passion for continuous learning and a dedication to supporting student success through the mission of the College.
- Demonstrated ability to teach in multiple formats including online synchronous and asynchronous, face-to-face, and hybrid formats.
- The ability to facilitate varied teaching methods (i.e. lecture, class discussion, testing, presentations) to enhance student learning and completion, including willingness to teach during the day, at night, and online, as well as at the main campus and extension centers.
- Experience in developing and implementing public relations and marketing plans related to performance ensembles, which includes building partnerships with area programs including K-12 and other performance groups.
- Demonstrated ability to meet ensemble artistic and strategic goals within budget and schedule constraints.
- Participation in professional and community organizations.
- Detail-oriented, well-organized, and able to interact effectively with college staff at all levels while handling confidential information appropriately.

Essential Function:
- Teach assigned course load (with an emphasis on music courses) which may include day, night, and online courses, as well as at the main campus and extension centers. Classes are to meet on time for the full allotted time.
- Oversee the operations of the Music discipline in collaboration with other full-time music faculty, including productions, marketing and management of the music facilities; supervise maintenance of equipment and instruments; and order and organize materials.
- Establish and promote an effective learning environment that maximizes documented student learning.
- Participate in professional development activities and maintain current knowledge in the discipline.
- Prepare, submit, and maintain reports related to student learning.
- Develop or assist in the development of curriculum, including review or revision, to keep programs up to date.
- Grade assignments in a meaningful way to promote continued student growth, return graded assignments to students in a timely manner, and assign final grades for all students, meeting or exceeding all institutional deadlines for completion as well as conducting student recruitment portfolio reviews.
- Provide educational assistance to students during regularly scheduled and posted times (i.e., office hours) or by appointment.
- Ensure student opinion surveys are conducted for each class and then reviewed after summary information is available to assist with increasing student success.

- Participate in community service through music-related public events.
- In conjunction with other music faculty, oversee, plan, and execute a minimum of 15 programs, performances, or recitals annually for the College. Assume full responsibility for music direction, coordination, and production.
- Serve as the lead music coordinator for the College’s Graduation Ceremony, managing repertoire selection, rehearsals, performers, logistics, and all musical components of the event.
