Job Summary


The America Reads/Program Coach is responsible for delivering the Read Better Be Better (RBBB) before-school and/or after-school literacy program. The Program Coach will work with another designated RBBB adult leader on site, guiding the program and creating a safe, engaging space for up to 32 students.

The Program Coach may facilitate the RBBB K–1 program and/or the 2–3 program. The RBBB K–1 program pairs kindergarten and 1st-grade Readers with 4th- and 5th-grade Leaders; the RBBB 2–3 program pairs 2nd- and 3rd-grade Readers with middle school Leaders.

MISSION: Read Better Be Better connects young readers and youth leaders to inspire a love of literacy and leadership.

Essential Functions and Key Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate the Read Better Be Better reading tutoring program from start to finish each term, including all program sessions, student activities, and end-of-term graduation events
  • Deliver the Read Better Be Better program in accordance with the structured curriculum, ensuring each session and the program term as a whole is implemented consistently and effectively
  • Prepare program materials in advance, and return the site to order at the end of each session, including carefully storing books, curriculum guides, carts, and supplies for future use
  • Take attendance and administer, scan, submit and enter all required program paperwork and student surveys
  • Guide and support student Leaders in delivering reading tutoring activities to younger students, and mentor a high school Program Assistant Intern when present
  • Provide positive feedback and encouragement to both student Leaders and younger Readers to promote engagement with reading
  • Maintain a safe, positive, and inclusive learning environment while encouraging student participation
  • Wrap up each program session and safely dismiss students according to site and RBBB procedures
  • Ensure all RBBB procedures and program structure are followed consistently
  • Communicate program successes, challenges, and student progress to the RBBB Program Coordinator, and maintain general communication with partner organization to optimize student experience
  • Step in to support reading activities directly when student Leader availability is limited
  • Assist in organizing books and updating literacy materials during supplemental office hours
  • Help maintain reading program supplies, documentation, and curriculum archives in support of tutoring activities
  • Attend RBBB Orientation and Program Coach Training(s) prior to site placement
  • Attend weekly offsite Coach meetings and all-team mandatory meetings and professional development sessions at RBBB headquarters each term
  • Host informative sessions and/or other relevant recruitment activities as needed

Minimum Qualifications


In order to qualify for a Federal Work-Study (FWS) job, a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) must be on file for the current award year and have eligible financial needs based on the college requirements. Please contact the Office of Financial Aid for more information prior to applying to a Federal Work-Study job.

Student must be attending Paradise Valley Community College during the current semester (enrolled in a minimum of 6 credits).

  • FWS is a need-based, federally funded program.
  • FWS requires the completion of a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), and confirmation of federal work-study eligibility as determined by the financial aid office.
  • FWS does not directly pay for tuition, and funds are only available to eligible students attending a minimum of six (6) degree applicable hours in a federal student aid eligible program.
  • The FWS award amount is based on your FAFSA results and college funding availability, which will determine the number of hours available to work while supporting the students academic goals.

Additional Requirements:

  • Valid IVP fingerprint clearance card (or the ability to obtain one before starting). RBBB provides guidance on completing the AZDPS application and fingerprinting process and can cover associated fees upfront or via reimbursement.
  • Successful completion of an AZDCS Central Registry Check is also required.
  • Experience working with children in educational, tutoring, mentoring, or program facilitation settings, (desired, not required)
