Financial Planning & Analysis Intern

Position Summary

The FP&A Intern will support the financial planning and analysis team by assisting with headcount tracking, monthly reporting, segment-level P&L analysis, and weekly operational data updates. This is a hands-on learning opportunity designed to expose the intern to how financial operations work within an electrical construction company. The intern will gain real-world experience in financial reporting, variance analysis, and cross-functional collaboration while contributing meaningfully to the team’s day-to-day work.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with headcount (HC) tracking by maintaining and updating employee data across departments to support workforce planning and budgeting.
  • Help pull together and format monthly reporting decks for leadership review, including gathering data, building slides, and ensuring accuracy of financial summaries.
  • Update the job analysis file on a weekly basis, ensuring data is current and organized for operational and financial planning purposes.
  • Support the preparation of segment-level P&L reports and assist with monthly variance commentary by gathering data and drafting initial observations for review.
  • Assist with the preparation of Monday morning electrical reporting decks, compiling operational and financial data for weekly leadership distribution.
  • Shadow Financial Operations monthly forecast meetings and prepare written recaps summarizing key discussion points, action items, and decisions for distribution to senior leadership.
  • Participate in local job site visits to develop an understanding of field operations and how financial planning connects to project execution.
  • Assist with ad-hoc financial analysis, data gathering, and research projects as assigned by the FP&A team.
  • Work closely with Finance, Accounting, and Operations teams to gather relevant data and develop cross-functional awareness.
  • Performs other duties as needed to support projects, operations, and the department.

Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business, Economics, or a related field (rising junior or senior preferred).
  • Completion of foundational coursework in accounting, finance, or business analytics preferred.

Skills & Abilities

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, VLOOKUP, basic formulas); experience with PowerPoint is a plus.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills; ability to summarize information clearly and concisely.
  • Eagerness to learn, ask questions, and take initiative in a professional setting.
  • Interest in the construction or infrastructure industry is a plus but not required.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

This job operates in a clerical office setting. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, and filing cabinets.

  • Requires mobility within an office environment.
  • Regularly required to talk and hear. Effectively communicate with others both written and orally, including using the telephone.
  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • The employee may be required to walk; reach with hands and arms; and bend.
  • May be required to stoop, kneel, and crouch. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Possess good hearing, normal or corrected.
  • The employee must be able to regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • The employee may be required to climb stairs.
  • Must be able to work 8 hours a day, 40 hours per week, and overtime as required and night or weekend shifts, as needed.
