The City of Reno Fire Department is offering an exciting promotional opportunity for internal Fire personnel who are passionate about leadership and aligning to and supporting the department's mission, which emphasizes public health, safety, prevention, and education. Battalion Chiefs plan, direct, supervise and participate in daily operations of station crews including both routine and emergency operations. They are responsible for balancing the distribution of resources to ensure effective and efficient emergency response for the community. Primary duties include administrative functions of various major department divisions, including Fire Administration, Emergency Operations, Fire Training, Facilities and Vehicle Maintenance, Public Education, Investigation and Code Enforcement. Required to exercises independent judgment and discretion at all times and is responsible for the direct supervision for multiple suppression company officers. Other responsibilities include developing goals and objectives and administering the budget. May be assigned other divisional level responsibilities to include limited supervision and coordination of other Battalion Chief duties and functions.

Examples of Essential Functions

  • Plan, direct, manage and participate in a variety of fire training, planning and prevention programs including fire suppression, prevention and emergency medical response activities.
  • Manage the development and implementation of department goals, objectives, policies and priorities; monitor and evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of service delivery methods and procedures; recommend, within departmental policy, appropriate service and staffing levels.
  • Assign work activities, projects and programs; review and evaluate work products, methods and procedures; meet with staff to identify and resolve problems.
  • Coordinate educational programs for schools, civic groups, public agencies, City and County representatives, law enforcement agencies and related groups; make presentations and promote fire protection services within the service area.
  • Assess and monitor work load, administrative and support systems, and internal reporting relationships; identify opportunities for improvement; direct and implement changes.
  • Respond to questions and inquiries from the general public regarding Fire Department functions; investigate and resolve problems.
  • Develop fire attack plans; respond to alarms; direct the proper deployment of resources at the scene of emergencies; and assume command of fire suppression activities and other emergency incidents.
  • Oversees and participate in the development and administration of annual budgets; forecast needed funding for staffing, equipment, materials and supplies.
  • Conduct a variety of organizational studies, investigations and operational studies; identify and pursue grant opportunities to supplement ongoing programs; and recommend modifications to existing programs, policies and procedures.
  • Train, motivate and evaluate personnel; coordinate staff training; work with employees to correct deficiencies; implement discipline procedures.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum qualifications must be by the date of examination (April 2, 2026).

Experience:
Four years of increasingly responsible experience in policy development, personnel training and program management as a Suppression Captain with the City of Reno Fire Department.

Or

Three years of increasingly responsible experience in policy development, personnel training and program management as a Suppression Captain and one year as a Training Captain with the City of Reno Fire Department.

Education:
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.

License:
Valid Driver's License.

A copy of your driver’s license must be attached to this application or provided to the Office of the Civil Service Commission (11th floor Reno City Hall) no later than at the time of examination. Candidates who have not submitted this required documentation prior to the examination time will be required to show proof before being admitted to the examination. No post marks will be accepted.

Application Preparation:
A complete application is required, including detailed work experience and education. Résumés may be submitted as supplemental information but will not be reviewed when determining minimum qualifications.

Applicants must submit a copy of a diploma, official/unofficial transcripts, or a certified letter from the university verifying completion of the requirements for a Bachelor's degree by the examination date (April 2, 2026).

Examination Process:
Assessment Center will be conducted during the week of April 2, 2026, weighted at 100% of the final grade. Each candidate will be scheduled for only one of the exam dates. Once scheduled, we are unable to reschedule candidates for a different examination date or time.

An optional candidate orientation will be held on Thursday, March 19, 2026.

Candidates must pass each of the assessment exercises to obtain a passing final grade for the entire examination process.

Notification:
Applicants are notified by email of their examination results. Applicants who do not meet the minimum qualifications will also be notified within two weeks of the job posting closing.

Employee/Veteran Preference in the Event of Tie Scores:
Promotional Examinations (Rule VIII, Section 7):
If two or more employees earn the same final score (including seniority points), veterans’ preference will be applied if any of the tied employees have submitted proof of an honorable military discharge. This preference is only used to break ties. If a tie still remains, it will be broken based on seniority in the current classification. Proof of honorable discharge must be submitted with the application.

Seniority Points:

Reno Fire Department uniformed employees shall receive seniority credit computed by adding to a passing score as follows:

For each full year of continuous (cumulative if separation was for layoff) service completed after current minimum qualifications eligibility, up to a maximum of fifteen years ............0.2 points per year.

Note: Battalion Chief seniority point calculation begins at the fourth year when eligibility for meeting the four year minimum service qualification and the required level of education have been met. (Seniority points are not calculated from the year of hire and are only calculated for an entire year of employment, not portions or fractions of a year.)

Appointment and Certification:

Appointments to positions in the City's Civil Service system are made on the basis of examination. Scores resulting from a competitive examination are used in determining a person's rank on an eligible register. The department may hire any of the persons referred. The names of those persons not hired may be considered when the next vacancy occurs, for as long as that register is viable.
