YOUR DAY AS A FIRE BATTALION CHIEF

As a Full-Time Fire Battalion Chief with American Fork City, you will engage in a diverse array of mid-level management duties, general administration, and advanced technical firefighting operations aimed at safeguarding the lives and properties of our residents. This role involves overseeing the day-to-day operations of an assigned station or platoon, ensuring efficient execution of fire suppression and rescue missions, hazardous materials containment, fire investigations, and emergency medical responses. To excel as a Full-Time Fire Battalion Chief at American Fork City, candidates must possess a comprehensive set of skills and qualifications. A minimum of six years of specialized training in fire science, business management, or public administration, coupled with ten years of full-time firefighting experience—including five years in an officer or administrative role—is essential. Knowledge of modern fire suppression, prevention techniques, and public sector management practices is vital.

Candidates should demonstrate proficiency in fire investigation methods, emergency medical procedures, and effective use of firefighting equipment. Strong interpersonal communication skills are crucial for establishing cooperative working relationships and effectively managing personnel during emergencies. Furthermore, the ability to think quickly and act decisively in hazardous situations, coupled with physical capabilities for command responsibilities, will ensure success.

Knowledge and skills required for the position are:

• Graduation from high school; plus six (6) years of specialized training related to fire science, business management, public administration or related field. (Bachelor’s degree is preferred)
• Ten (10) years of full-time work experience as a Fire Fighter Five (5) years as an officer and/or administrative experience. OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Thorough knowledge of modern fire suppression, prevention and training methods, technology and equipment;
• Knowledge of principles and practices of organizational planning, time management, supervision;
• Knowledge of modern public sector management techniques and practices; fire investigation methods, procedures and equipment;
• Knowledge of city, state and national fire protection and life safety codes.
• Must demonstrate knowledge of the community, possessing skills and abilities to achieve a positive presence for the department.
• Must have an excellent knowledge of the Incident Management System, Personnel Accountability System (PAR), firefighting methods, techniques and procedures; firefighting equipment types and varieties and their most appropriate and effective use; equipment maintenance and care; state and city codes laws and regulations, and ordinances related to fire prevention; fire vehicle equipment and apparatus operation; emergency driving techniques associated with heavy fire fighting apparatus; emergency medical techniques and procedures and first-aid; interpersonal communication skills training methods and techniques.
• Ability to effectively manage all line functions of the department including suppression and training;
• Ability to prepare clear, concise, and complete oral and written reports; interpret and explain laws, city and department policies, codes and regulations;
• Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work;
• Ability to effectively command personnel and coordinate emergency incidents; think and act quickly in emergencies; be physically capable of performing command and control responsibilities in hazardous environments which may require physical agility and strength and be prepared to use special equipment.
• Maintain a positive work environment. Work cooperatively with people; carry out the department’s mission with integrity.
• Ability to follow and give detailed verbal or written work instructions; work in dangerous emergency situations; perform strenuous physical labor;
• Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing;
• Assimilate modern fire prevention and firefighting skills; perform under extreme weather conditions; work on call and on shift work;
• Develop effective working relationships with supervisors, fellow employee and the public.
• Special Qualifications: Possess a valid Utah State Driver’s License.
• Utah State Advanced EMT Certification or Paramedic (ACLS, PALS, Red Card Certified, etc.).
• Apparatus Driver Operator (ADO) Certification.
• Firefighter 1 & 2 Certification through the State of Utah
• Certified Fire Officer 1 in the State of Utah
• Fire Inspector I and Fire Investigator preferred.
• NIMS 100, 200, 700a and 800b certification.
