Position Summary:

Under supervision of the Fire Chief, Battalion Chief, and the shift Fire Captain, the Engineer responds to both emergency and non-emergency calls for service including fire, rescue, medical, and/or hazardous materials emergencies. The Engineer is responsible for driving, operating, and maintaining fire department apparatus. The Engineer must respond to medical emergencies and provide pre-hospital care to victims of injury or illness at a BLS or ALS level according to the Engineer’s current medical certification. Performs rescue work, fight fires, participates in fire inspections, public education, and fire prevention activities; provides station maintenance; conducts routine vehicle maintenance and minor repair of vehicle, equipment, and department facilities; participates in training activities; and other duties as required.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

▪ Respond to all types of fires, including medical aids and vehicle accidents to provide the

proper treatment or service as needed.

▪ Perform rescue, salvage, and general firefighting duties at fire scenes.

▪ Participate in drills and training exercises in all phases of firefighting.

▪ Clean, maintain, and make minor repairs and adjustments to fire apparatus.

▪ Abide with laws, rules, regulation, and the operational procedures that affect the San Pasqual Reservation Fire Department.

▪ Operate the engine hydraulics for the fire incident, able to calculate all hydraulics and pump pressures at the nozzles, be accountable for all equipment on engines and the maintenance of the apparatus and keep records of all repairs, fuel, and mileage logs.

▪ Drive and operate the automotive fire apparatus to fire scenes and other emergency

scenes.

▪ Supervise station personnel in absence of Fire Captain.

▪ Perform all essential functions found in SPBMI’S Firefighter job description.

▪ Incumbents are expected to render first aid in the face of extreme conditions.

▪ Operate pumping equipment in accordance with proper procedures.

▪ Upon approval of the respective Fire Captain, incumbents are expected to perform the duties of Fire Captain when the level of manpower so requires.

▪ Collateral duties may be in the areas of fire prevention, pre-planning, public education, inspection, inventory, training, fire equipment testing activities or other aspects of the fire suppression/prevention programs.

▪ Assist in keeping fire quarters clean and in orderly condition.

▪ Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications & Skills:

REQUIRED EDUCATION / CERTIFICATIONS:

▪ High school diploma or G.E.D.

▪ Twenty Units towards Associate Arts Degree.

▪ Five years as a firefighter with an organized, local government agency

▪ CDL (class B commercial or Firefighter restricted)

▪ Driving record acceptable to the Fire Department Underwriter

▪ Company Officer 2A Human Resources Management for Company Officers

▪ Company Officer 2B General Administrative Functions for Company Officers

▪ EMT-1 D/C

▪ CPR/AED

▪ SFM FF – 2

▪ Haz Mat FRO/Decon

EXPERIENCE / QUALIFICATIONS / SKILLS:

▪ Knowledge of fundamentals of mathematics, physics, chemistry, electricity, hydraulics, building construction, automotive mechanics.

▪ Basic fire prevention and suppression principles, practices, and techniques; operation and

maintenance of firefighting equipment; safety practices and precautions pertaining to work; federal, state, and local codes, rules, regulations related to fire fighting.

▪ Must be able to perform all aspects of the Firefighter job duties.

▪ Must be able to work effectively and cooperatively with others.

▪ Must be able to work in remote areas, out of the county, and on weekends and holidays, to remain on duty as required.

▪ Applicants may be subject to a written and practical skills test. Must pass with 80%.

▪ Must be able to pass drug screen and background check.
