About Exodus Project

Exodus Project supports individuals returning to the community after incarceration by providing case management, counseling, housing navigation, employment support, and behavioral health connections. Our work is grounded in dignity, cultural humility, and meeting people where they are during moments of transition.

Many members of our staff have lived experience with incarceration, and we strongly encourage applicants with lived experience of incarceration, addiction recovery, or the criminal justice system to apply.

Position Summary

The Social Worker / Therapist provides counseling and mental health support to individuals returning from incarceration in Sacramento. This position works closely with clients to assess needs, develop support plans, and provide individual counseling and group support related to recovery, mental health, and life stabilization.

This role works collaboratively with the Exodus Project counseling team and broader program staff to support individuals navigating reentry.

Clinical supervision is available for candidates working toward licensure.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct intake assessments and evaluate client needs
  • Provide individual counseling services (in person, phone, or video)
  • Develop and coordinate individualized support plans
  • Facilitate periodic support groups related to recovery, mental health, parenting, and reentry challenges
  • Monitor and evaluate client progress
  • Maintain accurate and confidential documentation and case notes
  • Refer clients to higher levels of mental health or substance use treatment when appropriate
  • Provide reports to Mental Health Diversion Court when required
  • Collaborate with program staff and community partners
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Required

  • MSW or MFT degree
  • Must have or be pursuing licensure and be registered with the California Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS)

Preferred

  • Experience working with justice-involved individuals, people experiencing homelessness, or individuals with mental health or substance use challenges
  • Experience in case management or counseling within social service settings

  • Organizational and time management skills
  • Compassion and understanding for individuals impacted by incarceration, poverty, mental health, and addiction
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team

Schedule

Full-time
40 hours per week

Hybrid schedule may be available.

Compensation and Benefits

Salary range: $80,000 – $90,000 annually, depending on experience and education.
