ABOUT THIS POSITION


In 2025, more than 52 million passengers traveled through Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX), making it one of the busiest airports in the United States and a key hub in the nation's fifth-largest city. PHX is the largest of three airports in the Phoenix Airport System, which also includes Deer Valley and Goodyear airports, operated by the City of Phoenix Aviation Department (AVN). Together, these airports generate an annual economic impact of over $44 billion.

The Aviation Department has a vacancy for a Gardener - Sprinkler System position. The Gardener responsibilities are to perform landscape maintenance, re-vegetation, and restoration at Sky Harbor Airport, surrounding street landscape, specifically maintaining and policing assigned areas, trimming trees, conducting weed control, cultivating and fertilizing various plant species, operating mowing equipment, and trouble-shooting irrigation systems.

Additional duties include general landscape maintenance work such as litter patrol, raking, checking and spraying plants for diseases and insect control, fertilizing plants, trees and grass, and maintaining surrounding Airport properties. Gardeners who have the assignment of Sprinkler Systems are responsible for the same landscape maintenance requirements and provide expertise of irrigation maintenance, repair, and installation.

Work schedule: Monday - Friday, 5:30 AM - 2:00 PM.

SALARY


Pay Range: $18.60 to $31.82 per hour.

Hiring Range: $18.60 to $24.93 per hour.

Internal Only: Please understand that this is pay grade 139. If selected, your salary offer will be based on the applicable promotion or demotion worksheet in accordance with the City Pay Ordinance.

  • Promotions occur when the last two digits of the pay grade increase.
  • Demotions occur when the last two digits of the pay grade decrease.
  • Lateral transfers occur when there is no change to the last two digits of the pay grade.
  • When there is a change in the first digit of the pay grade, there may also be a change to your classification or unit.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • One year of experience in the care and maintenance of trees, plants, shrubs, and lawns.
  • Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
  • Working conditions:
    • Moving objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
    • Working irregular hours, second or third shift, weekends, holidays, and evenings as assigned.
    • Working outside in a variety of environmental extremes such as heat, cold, rain, air pollution, and dust.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS


The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:

  • Experience planting trees and shrubs.
  • Experience working with small machinery.
  • Experience with landscaping, irrigation, and tree trimming.
  • AZDA PMD certification, preferred.
