Qualifications and Experience
Specification Area Required Standards Education High School Diploma or equivalent; vocational training or a technical certification in HVAC or Sheet Metal/Duct Installation is a strong advantage.
ExperienceMinimum of 3 to 5 years of proven, hands-on experience as a Ductman, Duct Fabricator, or Duct Installer in HVAC/MEP projects.
UAE or GCC experience is often preferred (minimum 2 years).
Technical KnowledgeSolid knowledge of all major duct construction and installation standards, particularly SMACNA (Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors’ National Association) standards.
Drawing InterpretationProficiency in reading and accurately interpreting HVAC shop drawings, P&ID (Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams), and MEP coordination layouts to execute work on-site.
CertificationsBasic site safety training/certifications. Certification in welding/brazing may be a plus, depending on the job scope.II. Core Skills and Technical Competencies
The ideal candidate must be capable of both fabrication and installation with precision, especially in the demanding fit-out environment.
- Duct Material Proficiency: Expert skills in the fabrication, assembly, and installation of various duct systems, including:
- GI (Galvanized Iron) Ductwork (Rectangular and Spiral).
- PI (Pre-Insulated) Ductwork (e.g., Phenolic or PIR foam panels).
- Flexible Duct connections.
- Fabrication & Tools: Expert use of cutting, shaping, and forming tools and machinery relevant to sheet metal fabrication (e.g., shears, brakes, crimpers, notching tools).
- Sealing and Insulation: Ability to correctly install and apply thermal and acoustic insulation and meticulously seal all duct joints and seams using approved mastics and tapes to prevent air leakage and ensure system efficiency.
- Accessory Installation: Accurate installation of internal and external duct accessories, including:
- VCDs (Volume Control Dampers).
- Fire/Smoke Dampers (FD/SD), ensuring correct mounting and linkage.
- Access doors and turning vanes.
- Support & Hangers: Precision in marking and installing duct hangers, threaded rods, and support structures to ensure proper elevation and secure mounting of the duct network.
III. Site and Safety Requirements (UAE Specific)
- Safety Adherence: Strict adherence to all company, client, and UAE site safety regulations, including the proper use of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment), safe manual handling, and safe working-at-height procedures (ladders, scaffolding, and scissor lifts).
- Clash Resolution: Ability to coordinate and work effectively with other trades (Electricians, Plumbers, Civil workers) to manage pipe and conduit routing and resolve on-site installation clashes.
- Quality Control: Commitment to high-quality workmanship and the ability to self-inspect work for alignment, secure fixing, and proper sealing before closure and final inspection.
- Physical Fitness: Must be physically fit and able to work in construction environments, including high temperatures, confined ceiling spaces, and lifting heavy materials.
- Reporting: Ability to report daily progress, material requirements, and any site issues clearly to the Duct Foreman or Site Supervisor.
