Position Summary
The Graduate Research Assistant will assist with a research project studying protein conformation and stability. The successful candidate will utilize techniques such as UV spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, and dynamic light scattering to assess protein structures and their stability under various conditions.

This is a student position open to current UIW graduate or doctoral students.

Essential Functions
Experimental Design and Execution:
  • Design and conduct experiments using UV spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, and dynamic light scattering to assess protein conformation and stability.
  • Prepare protein samples and maintain sample integrity throughout experiments.
  • Optimize protocols to enhance the accuracy and reproducibility of results.
Data Analysis and Interpretation:
  • Analyze data and interpret results to determine protein stability and conformational changes.
  • Use appropriate software tools for data processing and statistical analysis.
  • Prepare detailed reports summarizing experimental findings and their implications.
Literature Review and Research:
  • Conduct comprehensive literature reviews to stay abreast of current developments.
  • Integrate new knowledge into ongoing research projects to improve experimental design and data interpretation.
Collaboration and Communication:
  • Collaborate with team members, including principal investigators and other students.
  • Present research findings at lab meetings, seminars, and conferences.
  • Contribute to manuscript preparation for publication in peer-reviewed journals.
Laboratory Maintenance:
  • Ensure proper maintenance and calibration of laboratory equipment.
  • Follow safety protocols and maintain a clean and organized laboratory environment.

Qualifications

Knowledge Skills and Abilities
Technical Skills:
  • Experience in general lab techniques.
  • Experience in protein characterization methods.
  • Strong data analysis skills, including familiarity with relevant software (e.g., MS Office, GraphPad, JMP).
Research Skills:
  • Ability to design and execute experiments independently.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
Communication Skills:
  • Effective written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively.

Required Education
UIW student enrolled in a master’s or doctoral program.

Required Work Experience
None.

Preferred Qualifications
Experience in UV spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, and dynamic light scattering techniques.

Required Certifications, Licenses or Registrations
International UIW students holding an F1 or J1 Visa: Please contact the Office of International Student and Scholar Services to confirm that all necessary documents for student employment are on file.

Work Hours
A minimum of 10 hours per week is required, with the work schedule to be determined based on the student’s academic commitments.

Physical Demands
Ability to stand for long periods and perform repeated pipetting tasks.
