The Student Union, Inc. is 501(c)(3) nonprofit auxiliary that maintains three major facilities at San Jose State University in downtown San Jose, California. These facilities include the Diaz Compean Student Union Building, the Provident Credit Union Event Center, and the Spartan Recreation and Aquatic Center. The Student Union, Inc. functions as part of the Student Affairs Division on campus, and is governed by a Board of Directors made up of a student majority, faculty, and administrators.

Job Summary
Under direct supervision, the Lead Marketing Graphic Designer assists with the design and execution of print material (e.g., advertisements, posters, brochures, flyers, etc.), as well as digital material, for the Student Union, Inc. facilities, programs, and services including the SU and SRAC as required. In addition, this position provides leadership, coordination, and quality control support to the student graphic design team, helping ensure brand consistency, accuracy, and timely delivery of marketing materials.
Essential Functions and Tasks
- Assist with developing marketing strategy, promotions, and social media management.
- Assist with designing and preparing layouts for production of print and digital files for posters, flyers, advertisements, announcements, banners, logos, t-shirt designs, calendars, manuals, brochures, reports, forms, signs, presentation folders, mailers, and magazine/trade journal ads.
- Assist with conceptualizing, composing, designing, and delivering digital marketing media.
- Assist in editing, and developing website content.
- Retrieve and document user feedback for website improvement and enhancements.
- Interact with full-time staff, vendors, and outside contractors to aid in marketing materials.
- Participate in marketing and outreach efforts, such as orientations, resource fairs, and outreach programs.
- Coordinate with the print shop to prepare files, submit jobs for production, and review proofs if needed.
- Attend meetings with full time staff to discuss upcoming events, campaigns, and marketing materials needed.
- Review and approve marketing materials created by other student graphic designers to ensure accuracy, quality, and brand alignment prior to release.
- Assist onboarding and training with new student graphic designers.
Minimum Qualifications
- Must be able to show a diverse portfolio of previous work, 3-6 pieces for review during the interview process. This includes design and photography.
- Must have academic and practical knowledge; and/or experience in photography, typography, illustration, layout, and production for print, digital media, and web design.
- Must be trained on Integrated CSU Information Security and V-Pat compliance for all social media and media production for accessibility within the first month of employment.
- Must be a matriculated SJSU student and continuously enrolled at least half-time* during the academic term.
- Half-time is defined as follows: Enrollment Status Half-time Units Undergraduate and Post baccalaureate Students 6.0-8.0 hours/semester
Preferred Qualifications
- Current enrollment in or plans to enroll in the Graphic Design BFA program is highly preferred.
- Current enrollment in Marketing, Business, or Communications is preferred.
- Employment for two semesters or more is highly preferred
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)
- Computer skills - proficient knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign) and Macintosh Operating System or Windows 10. Familiarity with HTML & CSS a plus.
- Excellent written and verbal skills.
- Must be organized and detail-oriented.
- Ability to set and meet deadlines.
- Ability to construct and design displays for presentations and distribution.
- Ability to collaborate with other departments on multiple projects while staying focused and on task.
- Ability to provide peer guidance and constructive feedback to other designers.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
- The position works in a wide variety of environments including both a typical office as well as an outdoors and indoor facility program-oriented environment.

- Dexterity of hands, fingers, and wrists to operate a computer keyboard and calculator.
- In general, the position works a schedule based on business needs 9 a.m. - 5 p.m., Monday - Friday, and may require evening and weekend work as needed.
- When school is in session - may work up to, but not in excess of 20 hours per week (among all concurrent positions).
- When classes are not in session (i.e. summer break) may work up to, but not in excess of 40 hours per week.
- This position is non-exempt from the provisions of Section 1 of the California Industrial Welfare Commission Orders.
Benefits
This position is employed through the Student Union at San Jose State University which offers employees to receive 40 hours of sick pay during the calendar year.

Background Check and Fingerprinting
Student Union employees are required to undergo and complete a successful background check that includes verification of employment and education, as well as a check of criminal records for employment. Candidates for positions where the employee will come in regular contact with minors and cash management will be required to be fingerprinted. This policy includes emergency hires and may also be applicable to volunteers depending on the work performed. In some cases, the background check will include a credit check and/or a Department of Motor Vehicles check, as well as a check of licenses and certificates when applicable. All background checks are conducted through the Student Union third-party vendor, Accurate Background.
California State University (CSU) Learning and Development
