Grounds Technician

About the Role:

The Grounds Technician plays a critical role in maintaining and enhancing the aesthetic appeal and safety of outdoor environments. This position involves the upkeep of lawns, gardens, and landscaped areas to ensure they are healthy, visually appealing, and safe for public or private use. The Grounds Technician will operate various landscaping equipment and tools to perform tasks such as mowing, trimming, planting, and irrigation system maintenance. Attention to detail and a proactive approach to identifying and resolving landscaping issues are essential to prevent hazards and promote sustainable grounds management. Ultimately, this role contributes to creating welcoming and well-maintained outdoor spaces that positively impact the community or organization.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience in groundskeeping, landscaping, or a related field.
  • Ability to operate landscaping machinery and tools safely.
  • Physical ability to perform manual labor outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Basic knowledge of plant care and maintenance.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certification in landscaping, horticulture, or grounds maintenance.
  • Experience with irrigation system installation and repair.
  • Familiarity with pest control and fertilization techniques.
  • Valid driver’s license for equipment transport.
  • First aid and safety training certification.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform routine grounds maintenance including mowing, edging, trimming, and pruning of lawns, shrubs, and trees.
  • Operate and maintain landscaping equipment such as mowers, trimmers, blowers, and irrigation systems safely and efficiently.
  • Plant, fertilize, and water flowers, trees, and shrubs to promote healthy growth and vibrant landscapes.
  • Inspect grounds regularly to identify hazards, pest issues, or maintenance needs and report or address them promptly.
  • Assist with seasonal tasks such as leaf removal, snow clearing, and preparing grounds for special events or weather changes.

Skills:

The Grounds Technician utilizes practical skills in operating and maintaining landscaping equipment to ensure efficient and safe grounds upkeep. Knowledge of plant biology and horticultural practices is applied daily to promote healthy growth and address plant health issues. Strong observational skills help in identifying potential hazards or maintenance needs early, allowing for timely intervention. Communication skills are important for coordinating with team members and reporting issues to supervisors. Additionally, time management and physical stamina are essential to complete tasks effectively within scheduled timeframes while working outdoors in varying weather conditions.
