This position is located at MARINE CORPS BASE HAWAII - KANEOHE BAY. Candidates selected for this position will serve as a A05 GROUNDSKEEPER working for MARINE CORPS HOSPITALITY SERVICES.

Major Duties

MAJOR DUTIES: Performs work requiring knowledge of gardening procedures and skill in growing and tending lawns, shrubs, and trees. The work includes planting and transplanting trees and shrubs, trimming, pruning, fertilizing, thinning, seeding, mulching, aerating, spraying and preparing soil for plants. Operates equipment and gardening tools and performs preventive maintenance duties.Performs seasonal gardening tasks such as fertilizing, liming, preparing seedbeds, watering, transplanting, laying sod, aerating, spraying, trimming, thinning, and mulching. Determines amount and type of seed, fertilizer, and lime to use. Determines which shrubs need to be pruned and to what degree. Prepares soilmixing materials such as sand, humus, topsoil and fertilizer in accordance with instructions. Mixes and applies Roundup and applies diluted arsenal under the direction of pest control personnel. Applies these chemicals to control weeds without burning or killing desirable plants and grass. Mixes and applies general use fungicides such as copper sulfate and industrial lime for use in Spruce canker control.

Operates a variety of hand and power-operated garden tools and equipment such as seed drill, fertilizer spreader, solo portable sprayer, brush chipper, hedge trimmers, weed eaters, pruning shears, and sprayers. Operates a farm tractor and lawn mowers. Performs plowing, planting, mowing, disking, and dragging. Operates up to 5-ton capacity 4 wheel drive trucks on a routine basis to pick up and move equipment to job site, to pick up, carry and deliver bushes, shrubs and small trees to planting area, and to haul pieces of
mobile equipment. Ensures that vehicle is not over loaded and that cargo is secured to the vehicle. Inspects trees and ornamental plants for obvious diseases (mold, brown spot, rusts, blight, mildew), plant insects (leaf miners, scale, borers, slugs) and unusual or poor plant growth. Reports diseases and insect infested conditions to the supervisor. Determines cause of distress and resolves problems by watering or fertilizing as needed. Updates tree and shrub inventory records. Coordinates work with the supervisor, and informs the supervisor of work required in addition to the prescheduled duties. Recommends procedures, equipment, material, and manpower needed to accomplish required tasks. Protects trees and shrubs from deer and rabbits by wrapping with protective screens.

Receives oral instructions and/or service orders requesting tree and shrub transplanting. Determines and/or recommends the exact locations and species of trees to be transplanted. Coordinates with appropriate personnel and checks for buried cables, lines, and pipes before transplanting trees. Performs limited tree surgeon work such as repair and maintenance of damaged trees by wrapping, guying and pruning. Determines which trees require trimming and to what extent. Must be able to identify various tree species and have knowledge of their compatibility to different types of soil for successful relocation.

Operates a tree moving machine, chain saws, a stump grinder, and pole saws. May be required to assist with the Timber Stand Improvement Program by performing duties in the plantation areas, such as felling trees with chain saws to thin out unwanted scrub oak or white oaks, using hypo-hatchets to destroy unwanted trees, girdling trees to prevent diseases from spreading, and manually and mechanically planting trees.

Prepares equipment for operation in the Spring, checks for needed repairs, and winterizes equipment in the Fall. Performs daily preventive maintenance tasks prior to operating equipment. Keeps blades, coulters, hand tools and chain saw teeth sharp at all times. Checks for gas, oil, grease and proper operation of tractors, trucks and equipment. Completes service orders, work orders, and Time Progress Reports. Takes soil samples as required. Polices mowing areas and maintains hiking trails. Operates caterpillar end loader to move and haul trees, brush, dirt, rock, etc. Maneuvers end loader attachments, such as the bucket, forklift tines, platform, and grapple. Determines appropriate equipment and attachments to use for various tasks. May be required to operate a full tracked bulldozer to pull tree planter and roller chopper. Provides World Class Customer Service with an emphasis on courtesy. Assists customers and communicates positively in a friendly manner. Takes action to solve problems quickly. Alerts the higher-level supervisor, or proper point of contact for help when problems arise. Adheres to safety regulations and standards. Promptly reports any observed workplace hazards, and any injury, occupational illness, and/or property damage resulting from workplace mishaps to the immediate supervisor. Adheres to established standards of actively supporting the principles of the EEO program and prevention of sexual harassment.

Qualifications

SKILL AND KNOWLEDGE: Must know how to perform such tasks as application of fertilizer to properly feed but avoid burning trees. Must know how to plant small seedlings without damaging or drying the delicate roots. Must be able to prepare soil from instructions on the proper mixture of sand, topsoil, humus and fertilizer. Must be able to safely operate equipment and hand and power tools as listed in the duties. Must be skilled in handling the controls for starting, stopping, backing, and driving motor vehicles with attachments over rough and uneven terrain. Must be familiar with vehicles driven in order to correctly load the vehicle and maneuver it to the site of operation. Must know the safety rules and regulations and other posted rules for moving vehicles.

RESPONSIBILITY: Works under general supervision. Mixes and applies chemicals under the direction of a certified pest controller. Supervisor provides specific instructions on which jobs to perform and gives advice on new procedures. Work is performed with little review while the work is in progress. Work is evaluated on the basis of review of specific jobs accomplished and the overall health and growth of plants and trees tended by the incumbent.

PHYSICAL EFFORT: Work requires frequent walking, standing, bending, and stooping. Occasionally climb ladders to prune trees. Frequently lifts objects in excess of 50 pounds, such as sacks of fertilizer and tree logs.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed outdoors where the incumbent is subject to all types of weather. Incumbent is exposed to dirt, dust, mud, and the possibility of cuts, scrapes, bruises, and even broken bones resulting from the operation of equipment and potential falls
