Heavy-Duty Truck Parts Purchasing Agent Job Description
Position Overview
The Heavy-Duty Truck Parts Purchasing Agent is responsible for sourcing, purchasing, and managing inventory of parts and components used in heavy-duty trucks, trailers, and related equipment. This role ensures timely and cost-effective procurement to support maintenance, repair, and fleet operations while maintaining strong relationships with suppliers and vendors in the trucking industry.
Key Responsibilities
- Source, evaluate, and purchase heavy-duty truck and trailer parts, including engines, drivetrains, brakes, suspension components, electrical systems, and other parts.
- Negotiate pricing, terms, and delivery schedules with vendors and manufacturers to optimize cost and quality.
- Maintain adequate inventory levels to support maintenance and repair schedules without overstocking.
- Research and identify new suppliers or alternative parts when OEM components are unavailable or cost-prohibitive.
- Review purchase requisitions, issue purchase orders, and verify order accuracy.
- Monitor vendor performance and address issues related to part quality, delivery delays, or billing discrepancies.
- Collaborate with the sales, marketing and service departments to forecast part needs and ensure critical components are available.
- Track parts usage, analyze purchasing trends, and recommend process improvements or cost-saving opportunities.
- Stay up to date with heavy-duty truck part specifications, product updates, and manufacturer recalls.
- Ensure compliance with company purchasing policies, safety standards, and applicable regulations.
Qualifications
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Business, Supply Chain Management, or related field preferred.
- Experience: 2–5 years of experience in purchasing or parts procurement within the heavy-duty truck, fleet maintenance, or automotive industry.
- Knowledge Requirements:
- Familiarity with heavy-duty truck parts, systems, and manufacturers (e.g., Cummins, Detroit Diesel, Eaton, Meritor, Bendix, etc.)
- Understanding of OEM and aftermarket parts sourcing
- Experience with inventory management systems and parts catalogs
Skills
- Strong negotiation and communication skills
- Excellent organizational and time management abilities
- Proficiency in ERP or inventory management software (e.g., FleetSoft, TMW, Karmak, or similar)
- Analytical mindset for pricing and inventory control
- Attention to detail and accuracy in documentation
Preferred Attributes
- Experience in a fleet maintenance or truck dealership environment
- Knowledge of DOT and EPA regulations affecting heavy-duty vehicle components

Pay: $40,000.00 - $70,000.00 per year
