Operates and maintains heavy equipment such as front-end loader, backhoe, excavator, motor grader, etc. used in various road maintenance activities. Performs various duties including manual labor or operating equipment in such maintenance tasks as clearing of right-of-ways, cleaning and grading drainage ditches, repairing shoulders, patching potholes, making base repairs, paving driveways, laying pipes, building catch basins and pouring concrete for curbs, sidewalks and raised medians. Operates 5 and 10 yard dump trucks in hauling equipment and construction materials such as concrete pipes, asphalt, dirt, limestone, soil, cement, and debris. Operates and maintains electric/gas powered tools including chainsaws and pole saws and uses hand tools in various maintenance activities. Assists in instructing crew members in safety practices such as flagging operations, wearing safety equipment, vehicle safety and when working with hazardous materials and waste. Assists in setting up work zone traffic control to include signs, cones, etc. Flags traffic during road repairs to control flow of traffic to protect workers, general public and equipment. Assists in emergencies and inclement weather operations which may include working hours outside of normal work schedule. When crew is in an "on-call" status, employee is available 24 hours a day. Performs other related duties as assigned.
One (1) year of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.
Physical Requirement: The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. This position requires walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies. Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis. Employee must be able to work outside and in inclement weather. Employee must be able to lift 50 lbs. Employee must be able to stand, bend, stoop, reach, twist, climb, balance, kneel, crouch, push, pull, grasp and physically manipulate objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. Works overtime, as necessary.
