We are seeking a Director of Human Resources (HR Director) to join our leadership team and oversee all aspects of human resources strategy, programs, legal compliance, and employee development.

Position Summary:

The Human Resources Director of People, Culture and Compliance will lead and manage a 5-person HR team and serve as a strategic partner to the CEO and senior leadership. The role requires a hands-on, results-driven HR professional with expertise in employee engagement, talent acquisition, compliance, labor relations, and workforce development.

The HR Director will ensure that Henry Booth House remains an employer of choice while maintaining compliance with all federal, state, and local employment laws, including Head Start/Early Head Start requirements.

Key Responsibilities:

Culture & Engagement

  • Drive employee engagement strategies to foster a positive, inclusive, and high-performing workplace culture.
  • Position HBH as a recognized “Best Place to Work.”

Talent Acquisition & Retention

  • Lead full-cycle recruiting, onboarding, and retention strategies.
  • Build strong pipelines through partnerships with colleges and universities.

Performance Management

  • Implement evaluation systems, measurable goals, and performance improvement plans.
  • Partner with leadership to align workforce performance with organizational goals.

Training & Professional Development

  • Identify training needs across the organization.
  • Coordinate professional development workshops, career pathways, and credentialing (CDA, Director’s credential, Gateways).
  • Track and report progress of all training initiatives.

Employee Relations & Compliance

  • Serve as primary contact for HR guidance, coaching, and conflict resolution.
  • Oversee collective bargaining processes.
  • Ensure compliance with employment laws and Head Start Performance Standards.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Manage payroll, salary administration, benefits analysis, and open enrollment.
  • Recommend competitive compensation strategies to retain top talent.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in human resources or related field (Master’s preferred).
  • SHRM-CP/SHRM-SCP or equivalent certification strongly preferred.
  • Minimum 15 years of progressive HR experience, including at least 5 years leading HR teams.
  • Prior nonprofit HR experience is highly desirable.
  • Strong knowledge of federal, state, and local labor laws.
  • Experience with collective bargaining and employee relations.
  • Familiarity with Head Start/Early Head Start HR compliance.
  • Tech-savvy with HR systems (COPA, Paycor, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, SharePoint).
  • Excellent communication, problem-solving, and leadership skills.
