Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
Building Services provide full maintenance and repair services for all UNC facilities and ensure the proper operation of those facilities in support of the UNC mission of teaching, research and public service. Building Services supports more than 300 campus buildings with more than 18 million gross square feet of space. The teams that provide quality maintenance, repair and construction services that support the teaching, research, and public service mission of the University include Campus Maintenance, EMCS, Facilities Operations Support, Housing Support, HVAC Systems, Life Safety Services, and the Office of Waste Reduction and Recycling.
The Refrigeration shop is a unit of Building Services that installs, operates, maintains, and improves DX systems, environmental chambers, process chillers, water coolers, freezers, refrigerated air dryers, window air conditioners, refrigerated scientific and food service equipment, and boilers. These diverse systems serve a variety of facilities including classrooms, auditoriums, offices, kitchen/dining areas, parking decks, arenas/athletic venues, laboratories, clinics, surgery suites, clean rooms, data centers, museums/repositories, and vivariums. These customers depend on the Refrigeration shop to achieve UNC’s many missions.
Position Summary
A SIGN-ON BONUS OF $4,668 IS AVAILABLE FOR THE SUCCESSFUL APPLICANT OF THIS POSITION PAID IN 2 INSTALLMENTS WITHIN 12 MONTHS OF HIRE:
$2,334 WITHIN 30 DAYS OF HIRE DATE & $2,334 12 MONTHS AFTER HIRE DATE.
Supports campus HVAC systems, refrigeration equipment, and complex air-drying equipment. Responsibilities include performing preventive maintenance on and making repairs to complex refrigerated air-drying equipment, direct expansion (DX) units, package units, ice machines, Liebert systems, dehumidification systems and small chiller systems; and troubleshooting complex control circuits, replacing compressors, repairing refrigerant leaks, replacing fan/blower motors, change-out of various mechanical and electrical controls, and maintaining EPA refrigerant management log.
Must possess a valid North Carolina Driver’s License or have the ability to obtain one prior to hire date.
Must obtain EPA 608 refrigerant certification within the first year of employment.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some positions may require special licenses or certification. Optional Guidelines: experience in the trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
Management Preferences
- Experience troubleshooting and repairing HVAC/Refrigeration systems with a focus on direct expansion (DX) equipment.
- Ability to accurately measure and diagnose system pressures using a refrigerant manifold gauge.
- Ability to accurately measure and interpret voltage, current, and resistance using an electronic test meter.
- Ability to understand temperature-pressure diagnostic charts.
Required Licenses/Certifications
Must possess a valid North Carolina Driver’s License or have the ability to obtain one prior to hire date.
Must obtain EPA 608 refrigerant certification within the first year of employment.
Special Physical/Mental Requirements
Ability to move objects weighing up to 65 lbs. with or without reasonable accommodation and move large equipment with hand trucks or general material handling equipment. Ability to work from ladders for extended periods of time, work outside during adverse weather conditions; and ability to wear a respirator and other required personal protective equipment (PPE) such as safety shoes, eye protection, and arc flash safety gear.
May require work in active high containment labs, which requires a baseline blood draw, a physical, and vaccines (currently flu, tetanus, and COVID-19) as well as annual medical certification, respirator fit testing, and specialized training. Entry into such labs requires escort from Environment, Health, and Safety department, respirator use, safety attire, and possibly shower in/out.
May also require working in healthcare facilities, with requirements including vaccines (currently varicella or chickenpox, flu, and COVID-19,) tuberculosis testing, and overall medical certification.
Ability to serve as a mandatory employee and report to work in support of essential (mandatory) University operations, even when adverse weather or other emergency conditions may require the University to close.
Ability to serve on-call duty on a rotating basis including nights, weekends, and holidays; and provide emergency response while on call for all Auxiliary and Refrigeration shop equipment.
